I think the two biggest mistakes off the bat were the $600 price (definitely turned me off) and the lack of breakout games at the beginning of the PS3's life. They were probably there, but not as prominent as the Wii Sports thing, and the 360 was already out for a year with a library of around 100 games.
The loss of exclusives hurts a lot to the Sony fans, but there are still plenty of exclusives coming up. PS3 is on the rebound, and is slowly closing the gap with the 360. However, it still needs more AAA advertised games, even though it has many games over 70% in Metacritic average.
