The middle button on the classic controller, what does it do?

I know if moves the back plating up and down, but what's the purpose is there some tool that works with it? It seems wierd Nintendo would add such a useless feature.

Not the home button for those who don't know what I'm talking about it's the button between the Zl and Zr buttons.

My guess would be a rumble pack?

Maybe it's actually a button for something in a vc game?

btw the middle button on the playstation 3 controller is known as the PLAYSTATION BUTTON, access to IN GAME XMB/TURN OFF CONSOLE/ CHANGE CONTROLLER PORTS/etc..

I'm talking about the middle button on the top of the controller where the shoulder buttons are placed and not the home button which is in the middle on the face of the controller.
