When was the PS1 released?

December 1994 in Japan and September 1995 in NA and Europe.

Edit: Yes, worldwide numbers.

It was doing well and leading the generation, but it didn't really explode until 1997. At the time FF7 was easily the most heavily marketed console game since SMB3.

By Sept 1996 the PS was slightly trailing the Saturn in Japan. The Saturn's problem was a terrible NA launch, a stupid $399 price tag (PS launched for $299) and many of it's best games weren't imported from Japan.

No, because the PS was a console that was suppose to make gaming mainstream, and here is the thing you guys aren't going to beleive "CASUAL" yep, that is right. The PS was the first casual console. So I don't think 3rd parties would matter. they sure haven't in the Wii's case.

Wasn't the NES the first casual console?

Wasn't the Atari 2600 the first casual console?

When I said casual, I meant casual based. I don't really see any consoles that are as casual based as the consoles winning consoles after the PS.

What's the difference between a casual console and a casual based console? I'm asking sincerely--I'm not sure what you mean is all.  Also, I don't know what your second sectence means.

My consoles and the fates they suffered:

Atari 7800 (Sold), Intellivision (Thrown out), Gameboy (Lost), Super Nintendo (Stolen), Super Nintendo (2nd copy) (Thrown out by mother), Nintendo 64 (Still own), Super Nintendo (3rd copy) (Still own), Wii (Sold)

A more detailed history appears on my profile.

I'm kinda glad that things turned out the way they did. Nintendo was my first love, but thinking back, they were sorta dicks. They needed to get knocked down a peg or two, and become more humbled. They're back on top now, so everything worked out in the end.

OH and I'm so glad they aren't arrogant now. Just hope it lasts. Probably won't though.

I think as long as Iwata is the CEO, they won´t fall into that trap again....but you never know, human nature can be a total bitch.

Ken Kutaragi, aka the "Father of the PlayStation."  Look at him now.

If i remember correct back in 1993 Sony was developing CD system on Nintendos new console, which later became N64..
Their contract cancelled because Nintendo didn´t believed yet on Cd´s.So Sony made its own console and rest is history..

So if N64 had CD´s Sony Playstation didn´t maybe even exists..on its current form..
Well. This is only talk..

The PS1 certainly wouldn't have been as successful since SquareSoft originally intended to make a N64 Final Fantasy until they realized how much Cartridge space it would require. However the Saturn was failing internationally due to cost so the PS1 would have picked up a respectable 2nd place and with Nintendo's refusal to use standard DVDs for the Gamecube the PS2 would most likely be the dominant system (the PS2 was an extremely cheap quality DVD player at launch) , MS would have entered the market to counter Sony and for growth purposes making this generation about the same.

In fact, it was for the SNES, not the N64, and it was canceled because Sony wanted rights on the games and profits.

I blame Wii Fit.

Of course had Nintendo been friendlier to third parties there's a very real possibility that the NES would not have been as successful as it was which opens up a whole new can of worms.
