Forums - Microsoft - If RROD had never existed, do you think 360 sales could've been far better?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the 360 could have sold 10 million more than it has now, and we wouldn't even be seeing Sony as a serious competitor. My line of thought being that, while it would have sold a modest 2-2.5 million more in the first year (when RRoD hate was at the highest), but, as we've seen in this thread, there are quite a few who would have gotten 360 INSTEAD of their purchased PS3. Ergo, 360 would have had even higher weekly sales over the PS3 than it did early on, while PS3 would have had less.

The PS3's price cut would likely have pushed the sales higher, but not to the levels they're at now, as some people just wanted a cheap, reliable console, no matter what brand, and the 360 would have been that brand.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I think so. If someone was really struggling to figure out which sytem they wanted and they narrowed their choices down to the XBox 360 and the PS3 then I think that they would almost definitely choose the PS3 because of this horrible hardware issue.

Well, considering that to avoid RROD would have required more testing and a delayed launch, I think it would have been a wash. It would have come out 6 months to a year later so it would have lost alot of the head start it had.

If MS had stepped up and admitted the problem right away they would have been better off also. Denying it was a problem for over a year left a bad taste in people's mouth.

They deserve the poor sales after putting out crap hardware and taking over a year to fess up to it.

The average person has not even heard of RRoD. I think RRoD is a bigger issue for 'gaming proponents' on whatever side of the spectrum they side with.

I think the cluttered menu system of the 360 is a bigger potential handicap for new (and very unexperienced) users than RRoD.

How can you people think something failing 1 in 3... that's 1 in 3!!! is something people don't know about?

As for HD sales, the "HD consoles" collectively have more market then the Wii. if the 360 was not a pice of shit from a build quality perspective, it would have most all of that market.

You say "people", I said "the average person".

The average person probably hasn't heard of the 360, much less RRoD.

           >> if the 360 was not a pice of shit from a build quality perspective, it would have most all of that market.<<

If you really think that, you are in serious denial of why people are buying up the Wii in hordes.

RRoD is a problem with the gaming enthusiasts.   The 360 "design and games" represents the best of what 2004 had to offer.

This is completely untrue.  This got a lot of coverage in the US, on shows like Today and GMA.  I've had people that don't follow video games much at all tell me they wouldn't touch the 360 because it is unreliable.  They don't know the exact RROD details, but the fact that the 360 is unreliable it out in the general public.

Saying something is "completely untrue" doesn't make it so.  Just because something was on television (on rare occasions) doesn't mean most normal people noticed or cared one way or the other.  As a point of illustration, can you cite *all* news stories shown on Today and GMA since the 360 RRoD was broadcast?  Not at all, but I bet you can recall most of those of interest to you...

The general public (i.e., those who didn't flock to see "Snakes on a Plane") have no idea about the idiosyncrasies of any videogaming system.

10 million? Considering the PS3 hasn't sold much more than that, I don't think it's a reasonable estimate.

Another way to look at it - you're saying that 33% of 360's potential buyers didn't buy it because of the RROD problem.

well, that and the fact they they lost some of their core customers after their console rrod'ed 8 times.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Not necessarily. PS2s died a lot as well. Probably not as frequently as RROD but most probably didn't last 3 years even though my little brother's is a launch era ps2 and is still working.

I think most people who want an xbox 360 got/will get one regardless of RROD

I can say the same for you.  Just because you think it is true, doesn't make it so.  The point is that millions of people saw it on those shows, told their friends, etc.  Nothing about RROD was broadcast, just that it had reliability issues.  You can believe what you want, but I've had several people ask me if what they've heard about the 360 was true.

Not really...
Many people which had RROD, bought 2nd and even 3rd x360. =)

Overall, IF presume, that new x360 model has a really low chance of ROOD, then what we see? 120-130k per week.

IF x360 would sell better, then not by a lot, that wouldn`t change much, only delay PS3 domination on total sales by a little more.
