Forums - Microsoft - if microsoft fail to make a profit, will they exit?

It's hard to imagine them losing money on the 360 from here on in. Especially with the installed base growing, reliability improving, and manufacturing costs for the systems falling.

not too mention the amount of software 360 owners buy,but i said its a possibilty since they are buying alot of exclusives

I don't know the figures, but I thought there was a general consensus that Microsoft would be pulling into the profit zone sometime later this gen.

Anyways if they don't profit, they'll just rethink their strategy and go with a new approach, or (maybe) keep pushing what they're doing now. Either way I don't see them leaving the business, since they have managed to start gaining more profits to help their initial loss with the Xbox.

ya what about Nintendo?

i think he forgot about a little company thats dominating now thats called ninty

Hardcore gamers go for hardcore games, XBOX 360 is out, means they have to settle for the PS3.

if microsoft will start to lose money again, and by the end of the gen for them to have lost more then made,do you think they will exit the console market.

According to this article their gaming division made around 54 million last quarter. Im not sure how reliable this is considering I've heard a lot bigger numbers concerning their profit. Nonetheless, it does show that microsoft is starting to turn a profit even if it is a small one.

Probably not. The XBox label exists to extend the Windows monopoly to set-top boxes, and Microsoft has plenty of money to sink into that venture.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Well, MS has been losing profits for a while, so I don't think that if MS had a few more quarters of neg profits, that it would make them prematurely pull out of the gaming market. Now that they are actually making a profit anyway, they should be able to safely make a profit as time goes on, as its just going to get easier and easier for them; keep in mind that as the chips on the 36o get smaller and smaller, they'll have fewer instances of console RROD which has been horrible for their profits, so somewhat better times are ahead for MS.

Even w/ the PS3 doing ever better, it still probably won't be as bad as every 360 burning up.

Last week 287k PS360s were sold. 378k Wiis were sold. Assuming all the sales went directly to the PS3 (which they wouldn't for a number of reasons) why would Sony dominate again? Seems like they would still be losing to me.
