Forums - Nintendo - Wii sales are not driven by games

Technically, Wii sales have been driven by Wii Sports more than any game released to date on the platform.

But if somebody wants to argue that hot new soft titles are responsible for driving console sales into a frenzy with each new release, I'd have to counter by saying the increased availability of hardware is far more responsible for those increased hardware sales, particularly in the NA region.

It's not possible to accurately gauge how much any particular soft title will push consumers to buy a Wii until inventory channels remain consistently stocked. Otherwise, it's more of an instance of "I'm buying a Wii when I have the money, and I'm able to find one on shelves."

Oh come on, we are less than a dozen replies into this thread and the "Wii sales are not driven by games" fraction is already out of arguments?

I agree, at the very least you should be able to manage a solid 3-4 rounds of dialect before running out of arguments.

If I were to go into a forum and argue about how PS3 sales are not driven by games, but by BLU-RAY, and then be proven wrong soundly (as I should be), I would come up with at LEAST 3 arguments to back myself up after the first one is destroyed.  Anything else is just lazy, frankly.

Please, PLEASE do NOT feed the trolls.

Probably not.

The Wii is penetrating the non-gamer market by the fact that the console presents itself as something other than a console. The Wii holds a meticulously-crafted image designed to push into that market segment, and I don't mean just the fact that it has a motion controller which allows you to play sports games or exercise.

Take the Miis, for example: they're crafted to be adorable caricatures used as avatars of the people in your house. Even the Miis designed to look like Freddy, Jason or Chuckie have this innate cuteness about them which makes them harmless and approachable. This is why the Wii is creating new players, because Nintendo figured out what kept people from liking games and buying consoles and came up with a solution.

Then there's the fact that the Wii is a slick little box which barely looks like a console at all. Add any controller you want to the PS360, but they're still obtuse, massive rectangles with no sense of design having gone into their creation. Their Mii rip-offs look bizarre and have an edge to them which makes them unappealing.

I don't want to cite Maelstrom's "Birdman" article, but it really is the most succinct method of pointing out why Sony and MS just don't get it. All they see is a remote-shaped controller. They don't seem to be grasping the underlying psychology behind the Wii which is what's making it so successful.

I'm betting the Xmote/PS3mote will have far too many buttons and will be intimidating to the non-gamer market. I also bet they'll release patches for existing games like Halo 3 which will allow use of the Xmote and completely unbalance the game because the core gameplay is designed around analogue sticks (just like RE4 on Wii was ridiculously easy on professional mode because the difficulty of analogue aiming was intrinsic to the challenge).

"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks

Well maybe he realized where he was wrong. If I had an argument and then realized it was wrong, I probably wouldn't persist.

OIr maybe he just wanted to squirt a little lighter fluid onto the flames just for fun, to see what would happen.

Your kidding right, I think its a combination of the price, the games, the peripherals, the advertising, and everything else.

If it was more to do with the games, then why didn't the Gamecube or N64 sell well?

Marketing & Image... It was cool to have a playstation 1, it was even cooler to have a playstation 2 and now your the man (or woman) when you have a Wii...

I love my purple toy brick.. but it couldn't stand against the-slick-cool-everyone-had-one-so-you-must-get-one ps2

Wii's sell because people always seem to have fun with them.

Shigeru did point out that the key behind the zapper, wheel, balance board, and the wiimote is to get people smiling, and that he wouldn't want people not to smile when using the Wii.

He wanted to not only have people look at the game and say "let me try next." but to look at the person playing the game and think the same thing. The combination of fun software and a person having fun is it's selling pont - in other words it sells because it's fun.

Hahaha, yeah, and bad PS360 sales are because of GTA4.

Some peripherals, like Wii Wheel, do help in sales, since it comes with a standard priced game. But it pushes game sales more than console sales. Wii Zapper is sold practically separately and Balance Board is too expensive to boost sales. When we look at it, memory expansion, rumble pack, memory card, Pokemon transfer pack and different coloured controllers didn't push N64 sales.
