Well we'll see what thats looking like next month.  We'll get the profit results for Sony's Q1.

If they were still losing money on the PS3 when MGS4 hit (ESPECIALLY if they were losing money on the 80GB bundles) they are screwed.  Of course, if the losses weren't too horrendous they could easily be made up in Q3 (Christmas).

I really think that after they make a profit this financial year, Microsoft should drop the price of the Xbox 360 substantially in the USA (and the "Others" regions they haven't dropped it in like Australia) to really make things nasty for Sony.  That way they have a profitable year to give to shareholders, marketshare to entice third parties and a low price to hurt Sony.

Are they really not making money from TVs when Sony "has now become No. 1 in global share in liquid-crystal display TVs"? :?

Hmm, pie.

As I said above, I'm not sure and I don't feel like checking right now, but I do remember reading something about fierce competition in the TV business causing so called "price deterioration".

Wish it would happen sooner........

hey guys i think when the link says 'TV'. It could mean TV shows... SONY has been extremely profitable with its HDTV's - especially with its BRAVIA range, infact that was the main reason for increased profits last fiscal year...

Anyway should be interesting to see if Sony's GAME area makes a profit this quarter.

Um profits are booked at the end of the year. How can you book future profits?

Hardcore gaming is a bubble economy blown up by Microsoft's $7 $6 billion losses.

@Spartan

ok....its very difficult to achieve that imo

This is sort of what I figured. They will be milking the hell out of every online game, service or tool. There will be less games, but more of them will be online - and all of them will have some form of DLC (or some other way for Sony to make money from them).

HOME is central to this strategy - as is LittleBigPlanet, GT5, and probably a host of other games. No wonder they canned "The Getaway" - all makes sense now.

Its very much the WoW (service revenue) strategy (but slightly different) - it also means there is a much smaller focus on games (less games), and also a smaller install base - but a larger focus on getting these units online. It also means more expensive hardware is less of an issue (as the install base is less critical, and losing money on hardware isn't required).

...

Its also interesting, because its moving Sony AWAY from Nintendo's strategy (huge install base, money from 1st-party software sales) - and towards MS's strategy (making money off Xbox Live / Windows online).

(sorry, this is sort of separate from this thread - probably should be in a thread of its own)
