Huh? MGS4 - Full of cutscenes, cut scenes = passive, Cliffy B = right.

Why the hate? Its not like he said it sucked or anything. He just rightly pointed out the difference between his game and MGS4. Its a complement that he singled it out, from all the other games so why get your fannies in a twist?

Gears of war 2 will probably earn twice as much profit as MGS4 - such is the way with cheaper development and broader fanbase. (think mindless action game vs something with intelligence.)

Tease.

Except the cutscenes are skippable. There is more gameplay in MGS4 than Gears. MGO is better than Gears MP. Having a story in a game isn't a bad thing. That's something Epic needs to learn. I just bought UT3 and it has less of a story than Gears. CliffyB is just being a jerk for no reason.

WTF - who is he to talk..
All you do in Gears of war is; Run - have a shootout, run - have a shootout, trough the entire game, in these brown/green environments..
It gets repetitive so fast, that in my eyes it's a 100 times more passive, than a masterpiece like MGS4 will ever be - with or without 45 minutes cutscenes...

Although it is rare for me to agree with Cliffy B. I do agree with him here (although he said it in a kind of douche bag way) ... The fact is that the way Metal Gear Solid tells its story is inflexable and passive, and is (potentially) outdated when you compare it with other games like Half-Life or Bioshock.

HL has just about no story, its some sort of fetch quest game with 5mins of dialogue repeated for the entire series.  It also has the worst driving in any game since the NES.  Bioshock has just about no story with lots of fetch quests, it was a great idea, but was turned into a bad thing.

just one point :

design

MGS4 >>> GoW2

Wow that is pretty sad imo. First of all its fine if he wants a very action based game, but that doesn't mean that because they are developing an action based game passive games are on their way out. Also how is MGS4 passive? Do passive people play with guns? Participate in wars? If the rest of the industry had his mentality I would probably quit gaming. The only games I would play are old games that don't need blood pouring from the sky after you kill somebody to have fun.

By passive he means spends large amount of times on cutscenes.

The guy is a known jerk. He and Jaffe or whatever his name is always seem to try and outdo the other in douchebaggery.

The American developers can seem arrogant sometimes but that is not their fault.  They don't know what the Japanese game industry is going through.

I would say they sound arrogant EVERYTIME they open their mouths and tend to understimate anything not american.

But, I couldnt care less anyway, 99% of americans doesnt even know about the EURO 2008, what can they posiblly know about games : )

Okay I couldn't let this pass.

Let me get this straight. You're basing your opinion on American developers (or Americans in general, I'm not quite sure what your intentions are at this point) on one or two vocal designers? Is it right for me to base Japanese designers on Itagaki as well? Can I make the assumption that all European developers fail to live up to their promises because of Peter Molyneux?

The fact is, as much as people want to say that Cliff is the bad guy, and that Kojima is some kind of god that should be worshipped, I think people need to look at the bigger picture. Last time I checked the Gears of War box, it doesn't say in flashy letters "A Cliff Bleszinski Game" followed by many references to him developing the game within the game itself. I LOVE the Metal Gear Solid series, I've already completed MGS4 twice and plan on unlocking most or all emblems, so it's not like I have some kind of agenda against Kojima, Konami or MGS4. By no means am I defending Cliff either, because he should have worded his statement differently, or shut his mouth completely. This isn't the first time he's insulted other games (Zack & Wiki, Cooking Mama), and probably not the last time either.

I also find it funny that people are SO upset by these words that they're willing to cuss him out, stating things such as "WELL KOJIMA CREATED A GENRE, WHAT DID YOU DO CLIFF? YOUR GAMES ARE SO GENERIC." On the contrary, I think both designers are similar in that they refined a genre THAT ALREADY EXISTED (yes, people, stealth games existed before Metal Gear). If you think Gears of War brought nothing to the table, let's take a look at how influential it was to games that preceeded it. Do you think games like Uncharted, GTA, OR EVEN METAL GEAR SOLID 4 would have the cover system if it wasn't popularized through Gears of War? Am I saying Gears of War pioneered the cover system in video games? Absolutely not. Even Perfect Dark Zero had a cover system. I'm saying that Gears of War popularized the technique, and as a result, many games utilize the feature. So let's give both designers credit for their achievements in the gaming industry instead of childish labeling.

If you've been following the industry for long enough (by long enough, I mean at least a year), you'd already know that Cliff, among MANY other developers spanning many nationalities are arrogant, that's just the way it is. Does that give you the right to trash their games though? Politics aside, I love both MGS4 and Gears of War, though admittedly, Gears of War 2 doesn't look like much more than a slight upgrade from the first, which isn't a bad thing I suppose.

Oh, and if you want to base American intelligence and awareness on the Euro 2008 (a sport that isn't even that popular in the U.S. anyway), I think you should recheck your priorities.
