Forums - Sony - Did MGS4 kill my 60gb or can it be saved?

I really feel for you. Personally, I won't take a 40gb as a replacement even though I have a PS2. In my case, I only have ONE game system (a 60gb) and my cable box connected to my TV and all is well.
I use my PS3 to play all my PS era games, stream media and watch all kinds of movies so I'd have a mental breakdown if it broke.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

That really sucks. I would hate it if my 60 GB PS3 died and Sony didn't replace it with the same model. Like Pristine20, I like having just 1 system to play 3 generation of games and my Bluray/DVD movies.

I have two friends whos 60gb ps3's have failed. one was within warranty so he had a replacement with a couple weeks. the other one's ps3 was out of warranty and I convinced him to pay the $200 something to get a replacement, this took a little longer though (he was planning on pay $550 for a new one). they both got 60gb units as replacements.

Just how high is the failure rate on the PS3's?

The real failure rate, not the .5-2% bandied about.

I don't know. The one that failed within warranty had the slot loading mechanism break and it wouldn't eject discs. His was replaced quickly but this also happened at the tail end of being able to get a 60gb in store. My other friend's 60gb that broke was getting all sorts of crazy graphics glitches and games freezing up on him. His took a while longer, but there was some complications and sony was slow.

It seems Sony can't make reliable games machines. 2 PSX 4 PS2 and now a broken PS3.

I own all Sony stuff too, so its only the games machines that give me trouble.

Wow i'm pretty sure theres a pattern here of you breaking consoles and blaming sony. Like one or two could be bad machines, but 4 PS2's? i think your breaking them.

I've had 1 PSX break. 0 PS2's. 0 PS3's.

My PSP broke but i'll openly admit its my fault, not the machine.

^ there were some awful iterations of the ps2. v2-v4c were all pretty bad for reliability, though even some v1's had issues. imo some of the best ps2's made were the last of the fats (v8-v10). the slimlines are pretty good too.

This is really weird as I have heard of multiple people having MGS4 kill their PS3s. It has played without flaw on both mine so far.

I'm scared to buy the game now...

Anyway, I feel for ya dude--I got the RRoD in my second match of the Halo 3 Beta!

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I heard there was supposedly a bad batch of MGS4 discs that cause problems with the 60GB model. If this is true I would contact Sony and explain the situation.

I haven't had any issues yet but it has me worried myself.

I hope that doesnt happen to me..

But I doubt it, Ive been playing MGS4 24/7 its perfect, but lets hope it doesnt happen to my near launch model.

I have also heard the problem lies in one of 2 things usually.

HDD issue or Firmware issue. People also had issues where it stopped reading their discs entirely.

Call Sony.

You seem to be the 3rd or 4th person I have heard of with this issue on their 60GB model, so it may not be widespread.
