Forums - Sales - DS is no competition for PSP, says Sony

Well the PSP is starting to hold its own in Japan but one has to wonder if that is more or less do to market saturation for the DS. The DS is the best selling game system of all time in Japan now I am not sure how much room there is left in Japan for the DS to grow.

The reason I'm so hard on Sony for it being a video/music player is because their strategy for content was horrible. UMD was completely botched. Nobody bought their music through their store, did they even have one?

Really if audio/video was so important, they should have had an iTunes killer ready to go, so they could SELL all their content. Instead they made it so difficult to get content, users had no choice but to use underground methods of content acquisition.

Did Sony make any money off that music and video? I'm guessing most people pirate or copy from their existing collection.

I'd imagine the profit margins are quite poor on hardware, compared to the DS and iPod. As far as making money as a hardware platform, I just don't see it being a big profit generator. And if they don't make much money off of games, video or music, where do they expect to really profit if hardware profits are small relative to the industry?

What does Nintendo make per DS sold? Or what does apple make per ipod sold? I'd imagine Nintendo makes maybe $30-$40 on the DS, Apple makes maybe $30-50 on the ipod (depending on which version) and Sony makes maybe $10-$20 on the Core and $20-$30 on the bundle. Again these are all guesses.

You don't have to wonder, the reason the DS has slowed down in Japan is only because of market saturation.

You heard 'em ioi, put that PSP in a different section altogether. And don't forget to give both DS and PSP 100% market share for their respective (and totally different, seriously) markets. Oh, and while you're at it, put the Wii in a different section as well. 100% baby! Woo!

There, now everyone is happy. *dies a little inside*

Put it with the iPods and the Zunes. Call it the "lol pile."

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Man ... the hate in this thread is amazing . And pathetic in the same time .

Yes , the PSP is partially competing with the DS , but I do agree that game library wise the PSP has an entirely different market . Just looking at a chart a couple of months ago I saw that the PSPs game library had almost 50% of its games made out of M and T rated games , while the DS game library has ~ 75% E reated games ... that says a lot ...

The PSP didnt create this market tough . Its mostly built out of technology lovers , Sony loyalists and ex GB owners . The DS on the other hand opened up a totally new market and thats why its so successful . So yeah , I dont think that the PSP and DS are battling for the same crowd ...

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

yeah ds is not competing with psp cause DS IS ACTUALLY A HANDHELD and not a multimedia device that can play some games like psp(with all respect to psp).

i still don't get it, they both are trying to b the portable gaming solution for the market...any one arguing against that is just kidding themselves.....

its just like cell phones and saying the i phone is trying to compete with the blackberry...they both want you money to be spent on their portable evice.......sometime people can buy into to much bull
