According to Ubisoft:

Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz notes that Ubisoft was also on top of the casual gaming trend before everyone else--besides Nintendo (other-otc: NTDOY.PK - news - people )--and tapped into the teen girl market for the DS handheld console.

Tony Key, Ubisoft's senior vice president of sales and markerting, says girls under 15 control 50% of DS sales worldwide, but no one was catering to them. In 2007, Ubisoft developed the "Imagine" line, which lets girls play out their figure skating or fashion designing dreams, and "Petz," which allows girls (and boys) to raise virtual dogs or horses. Casual games accounted for 25% of Ubisoft revenues in fiscal 2008, up from 10% in 2007.

The company is busy creating even more content that speaks to teenage girls' interests. Key wouldn't reveal results of Ubisoft's research on the topic, but he hinted at social networking.

DO you know how much imagine babiez sold? 1 million units. That is 1/74th of the ds' user base. Yep 50% right there.

Why do you asume that girls only buy Imagine Babiez for the DS ... there is also a Barbie and Rugrats game for the system :P

The thing is that is not even close to 2 percent of the ds' userbase let alone 50 percent. If what they said was true I expect at least 5 mil sales.

Even if you assume that Ubisoft is correct (which I would be doubtful) that would mean that there are still more people who are over 15 years old and own a DS than there are people who own a PSP ... Being that there will certainly be people who own PSP systems and are under 15, and this could be a pretty major portion of the PSP userbase (maybe 25% to 50%) it means that the DS is still the more popular system with older gamers by quite a wide margin.

Most people I know use their PSP as a MP3 player, portable web browser, and occasional game machine on-the-go. Everyone I know who owns a DS, just uses it for games (of course). I'd say there's overlap, but the PSP appeals to people for more reason than just games, unlike the DS.  I'd even go as far as to say that it appeals because it can do many things, and only if you are really into portable gaming, does the DS appeal more.

Heck, if/when that GPS receiver for the PSP comes out, it'll be the cheapest GPS on the market -- I'll be buying that receiver on day 1... another handy use for my all-purpose PSP.. yet another excuse to take it with me on long trips.

Funny.

Sony has to choices here.

PSP as gaming machine - it gets beaten by Nintendo and DS badly

PSP as media player - it gets utterly abused by Apple and the iPod. Not even funny.

So Sony, which do you want to be? A good second place finish or a laughingstock? Your choice.

Seriously, Nintendo and Apple are laughing at Sony.

Sony is like that sad dude who thinks he gots it going on in public ,but goes home crying, curled up in the fetal position.(when it comes to handhelds)

You know , its actually funny that you are talking again without knowing no straight facts :

The Ipod managed to sell l~ 11 million units in 3 years , while the PSP passed the 30 million mark . So where are you actually getting your numbers from ? I see that Sony actually managed to sell 6 times as many PSPs as Apple managed to sell Ipods . (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ipod_sales_2008_Q1.svg )

And as a gaming device , like it or not it is the first one that ever managed to get a significant market % from Nintendo , even now heaving almost 1/3 of the entire market ...

So yeas , the PSP went on a different rute , managing to somehow have a different market than the core market of the DS or Ipod , and thats how they managed to ship over 36 million units to date .

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Please learn how to read statistical data correctly.

The Ipod sold 11 million LAST QUARTER ALONE. The quarter before that, it sold 24 million IN ONE QUARTER.

It has to this date sold a minimum of 150 million units, just by roughly adding up the data that is per quarter.

so.....

35 million vs. 150 million? or 35 million vs. 66 million?

You decide.

 LMFAO!!!@!

Awesome

I am WEEzY. You can suck my Nintendo loving BALLS!

MynameisGARY

Also, Apple sells a ton of content through iTunes. Nintendo sells a ton of content through games.

They both have a strategy beyond just hardware.

You obviously havent read my respons , because if you would have , you would know what I meant by that post . Dont bee so "fast" next time , and take your time readin all posts ;)

FishyJoe : yes , unfortunatly I agree on that one . Sony made a louzy job at securing PSP software sales . PSstore is pathetic , at best , at weekly game updates , especially for the PSP ( and PSone games ) and UMDs a). didnt take off as well as they expected ( saying at least ) b). has absolutly no piracy security . The PSP came out with NO anty-piarcy protection , except a weak software protection ( which comes in the form of Firmware updates ... yes , the ones whom are ususally cracked in less then 24 hours :( ) .

Sony should come up with a better protection system , have much more quality games and finally build a respectable , direct-PSP availible PSstore . If they do this , maybe we wil see some serious software improovements :)

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

I guess they can't admit they are getting owned by DS.

The DS and the psp both have great games, but it isn't hard to see that the psp is definetly being affected by the DS. You can however, make the arguement that the ps3360 isn't being affected by the wii. Just look at the games. The psp is being starved, while the DS is getting fatter and fatter.
Why would a publisher take a big risk on a game for the PSP when they can release one on the DS and are almost guaranteed to make money?

BUT, If you look at the...... well..... I'm trying to say something positive about the psp....... they have prettier games? (and they really do look great sometimes)
The DS just has variety and quantity..... I guess you could say the same about the psp, to a lesser extent. At least there aren't 10 mario games available for the psp.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

That's a positive?  Just buy other DS games...

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Tag, courtesy of fkusumot: "Why do most of the PS3 fanboys have avatars that looks totally pissed?"
"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

Well, it's a positive for me. They should just retire mario, he's getting tired of all these adventures and also he's over 50 years old now.
