It's not so much about a single company, but rather the console that produced the rifts in gamers.
This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*

Haha, fair enough. Considering I get my jollies through reading court decisions, I'm in no position to judge other people's idea of fun either.

Those guys who never heard of Atari, Pacman, Pong, Tetris and so many other gems from gaming history should stop writing bullshit and start reading and researching........
Nor Nintendo or Sony hit the casual market first.
@Dno
Can you relate the number of hardware sales to it's respective time period?
The number of Atari consoles that were sold by that time is just impressive or even more impressive than PS2's sales.......... Don't try to consider a number out of it's original context.
Uh Nintendo merged "hardcore" and "casual" gaming back in the fricking '80s, when Sony was still a little more concerned with VCRs than videogames.
ok back to topic seriously...
It really doen't matter who's first. We can argue for as long as our lifetime to decide.
Each platform deserves credit, not only the PS2 for they offered games for the "casual" audience (from atary to last gen consoles). Some did more effort, some didn't. Even PC and internet influenced in the casual gaming boom. So there really is no absolute "pioneer".
However, the only company that on this gen considered the non gamers and former gamers a priority in order to expand the market was Nintendo with the Wii. No other console approached the non-gamer with so much effort and passion that Wii, other consoles started as a hardcore platform and then moved to the "casual" eventually.
