Forums - Sony - Penny-Arcade- interesting note about MGS4 install times

I read this over on Penny-Arcade and thought it was pretty interesting (NOTE-- whole post here):

In the space of our play experience, we've already seen two separate installs. The game is still broken up into discrete areas, which I found odd, the assumption being that if we were taking time out to install shit it was because we were doing it to sustain a single world. You would have a hard time convincing me that multiple installs over the course of playing a videogame are worse than disc swapping. This has become some kind of theological question on forums, a kind of philosophical pinata, except no matter how many times you strike it no reward is forthcoming. Blu-Ray is only a convenience if it is actually convenient, if it doesn't require concessions either at the beginning of an experience or at several points throughout.  It's amazing to me that this is considered progress.

They do raise a good point there.  Is BluRay really convenient if instead of swapping discs you get installs at various points in your game?

Short answer? No.
Long answer? No. Not at all.

I have to agree with Penny-Arcade on this one ... I never really minded the 30 seconds it took to swap discs on games as long as it was limited to only doing it a couple of times; swapping discs constantly on old PC games was really annoying though.

If you're spending 5 minutes to reinstall the same game several times throughout a game that would be (at best) a similar level of annoyance to swapping discs; not necessarily the worst thing in the world, but with how few multi-dvd games there really are it does beg the question if there really is any benefit to Blu-Ray.

@twesterm

no I would still rather have everything in 1 disc....as in my 2nd playthrough or playthrough with friends I don't wanna think

right that bit with EVA, what disc was it on....no I want it all on 1 disc.

I don't mind installs, but they should have just given an option to install everything rather than overwriting things to save space.

OF course, because you'd much rather re-install a game while your friends twiddle their thumbs...........

With 20-80GB of space, not many people will be able to keep their games installed.

I rather wait through an install screen then swap 5 discs.Blu-Ray is used for added quality and content,not as a means to only replace swapping discs.

In short regarding Blu-Ray;Sony adopted it,the competition will copy it,cough*Microsoft*cough cough.

@starcraft

but you don't re-install it....WTF are you going on about

Well, the installs in most PS3 games limit loading times, however even with the multiple installs MGS4 still has loading times, small ones, but they are there. To be honest, I don't see how people complain about them. The installs are well done, that is if you seen them. Did they mention what Snake does during those installs?
