Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft hints at a $199 Core system

Crazzy - 120 million people what you just bashed last generation.

Core isn't past gen since it kinda invented the 2-tier gaming system (outside of Sega and their 1000 addons).

Any system can be a threat if the content and price is there to deliver, regardless of the name. Sony was there for 10 years with the Playstation brand, Nintendo had it with the Nintendo Entertainmen System brand, and MS could have something viable with the Xbox brand.

MY POINT is , that to choice a version of console without MC or HDD over version of console with HDD only for 50$ it`s stupid. PS2 had only one version, that`s why you don`t needed to choice, and every gamer was buying MC. But with core it`s pointless to buy it.

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

As long as the Premium doesn't get a price drop, you probably could get away with getting the core for $200 and then get the 20gig HDD for a total of $300, but that's the only way I'd do it.

However, hasn't this been debunked though?

Even if it's true, I'm waiting for better hardware (65nm for a start) first or even better, if so many 360 games don't come to the PC too. Why get a 360 to play GRAW 1/2, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Gears of War (I hope that comes eventually), Halo 2 (and probably 3 as well), Bioshock, Oblivion, F.E.A.R, Prey, Quake 4, Call of Duty 2, ect when I can play them on my PC (minus some graphical quality though for performance)?

Well there are really good 360 games that are coming out or have come out that haven't made it to PC and some likely never will.  For example Mass Effect, Too Human, Banjo Kazooie 3, Halo 3, Lost Odyssey, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Cry On, Blue Dragon and others that are coming out and don't have any PC release dates.  There has also games that have already been released like Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, Gears of War, etc that haven't been on PC either.

Ummm.

Because your gaming PC costed $1000+ if not more, and my X360 costs 1/3rd of that, if not less?

I bought my 360 exactly for PC games, like Oblivion. The issue is that in order (when Oblivion came out), to go buy an up-to-date PC to play it @ reccomended settings, and a little bit higher, I would have to pay $2000. When Fallout 3 comes out, I'd have to upgrade the GFX card, throw in more ram, and pray that I don't need a new mobo. That's atleast another $500.

Or I can go out and spend $400 on a X360, suffer a slight discount in quality, and still play the games I want to.

Face it, the reason PC gaming is declining is that the increase in computational power to play games (and nothing else) is astounding. You have litterally no need for a dual or quad core CPU, and 2gb of ram plus a dual GFX card unless your playing PC games. Even a strong video editing rig relies more on HDD space, rather than having top-of-the-line computational power.

Thats why consoles are so great: It's a one-time fee and your done. And with the 360, that one time fee includes 50% of the current PC library. All I need are some 4x games, more RTS, and flight sims, and then I'd be in heaven.

Till then, take your $2000 rig that always needs upgraded, and I'll gladly take less-than DX10 graphics to play the same game.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

So here I am, already with my machine that I not only play games on, but also spend most of my time with doing everything else (including video/photo editing for college). Like I said in my previous post, I can play all these games even if I have to suffer a performance hit to play them.

You see the PC as a needless investment, I see it as important because I spend so much time on it, so that's where we differ. Still, it really shouldn't matter that much because we're still both able to enjoy a lot of these games, right?

He never said that the PC was a needless investment, he just pointed out that PC gaming is generally more expensive.  If you buy a $400 360 today you're guaranteed that all the games that will be released for it in the next 3-4 years will run on the system at full settings the way they were intended to, while if you bought a $400 computer today you'd be lucky to play some PC games at full settings and probably not be able to play the games released even a year or two from now that way.

Also look at some of the games you've mentioned, Halo 2 requires an upgrade to Windows Vista, Gears of War isn't even out on PC, and some of the other games you've mentioned require a fairly decent PC in order to get a good gaming experience out of them.

Check out Gamedaily's update on this hint...Microsoft has said the comment was misinterpreted and no price drop is in the offing with all the great software to come.  The representative also claimed Microsoft is happy with sales at the price point.

Okay, this might sound like a crazy question, but how come the people who want Halo3 and would buy a console for Halo3 haven't already done so for Gears of War? Seems like the exact same audience.

Gears of War doesn't cater to the same demographic as Halo. The majority of the people I've played in Gears of War can't stand Halo. They are two completely different styles of gameplay. A Halo player is about run & gun with no consequence. Gears of War is more strategic team play. Most Halo players I know are still playing Halo 2 on their Xbox.
