I'd have to go with Majora's Mask: it changes up the formula enough to differentiate itself from its predecessors, but not so much that you can't recognize it as a Zelda game. I also love the feeling that there's an entire world out there, and that life goes on even if you never even meet certain people. Good times.

My vote goes to Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. Not only is it one of the absolute best 2D games of all time, but the way it went back to the first' s style while adding so many things to it is nothing short of astounding.

Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros. Melee are also really big improvements. Oh, and Pokemon Gold/Silver were absolutely the pinnacle of the series.
