Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What's wrong with 3rd party devs on the Wii??

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums but I have been reading them constantly since last year. Finally I decided to post, because I feel bad about my console.

I'm going to go through the major 3rd party developers.

The situation with Wii's 3rd party is concerning as of now. Most of the devs are shifting their resources to the HD consoles. Quality titles are being developed majorly on the HD's, and devs say it's because hardcore gamers know the difference and they will only play quality. That's very sad from the developers to think Wii's audience is stupid.

All good 3rd party support will be mostly coming from Japanese devs.

Look at this stats all from gamerankings, avrg scores for games on the Wii from the following companies, all big 3rd party devs, and not listing the shovelware companies like Data Design, Phoenix games, etc:

Ubisoft: 60% (Missing reviews for a lot of games, most of them shovelware, that and more reviews for the games with score would have brought down the score considerably, maybe below 50%)

Comment: Most of the games on this list are shovelware, the games set for a future release also look likley to be shovelware. The most dissapointing 3rd party dev so far, future looks worse than it already is.

Capcom: 80.7%(Most of their games are great, even though there are some ports)

Namco Bandai: avrg cant be figured out since most of the games dont appear, so far would be around 55%~

Comments: A lot of casual games and some shovelware, but the future looks very good, this is one company that will bring gems to the Wii. Fragile, Tales of Symphonia, Swords of Legendia, Taiko Drum Master, Sky Crawlers. Best support so far judging by future releases. Of course they have some low budget games in the works too.

My conclusion: A lot of 3rd party devs are not taking the Wii's userbase seriously, but as I found out, some of them actually are. I think it's a matter of time before 3rd party start shifting resources to the Wii. I can't think but that companies that choose to ignore the Wii right now, will surely come crawling back in the future. At least that is what I hope. The core audience and the "not so stupid casuals" can differentiate between garbage and a game taht has some effort put in it.

Sorry if this is too long, I wanted to make a good entrance to VGChartz ;)

Thanks for reading, please comment.

Welcome, and excellent post. If you want to understand an excellent view about how 3rd parties and the wii will work read the article in my sig. It's the first link. I believe square enix Sega Namco and capcom will be at the top around next year.

i am indifferent to the situation--i have wide tastes and multiple systems, there will always be games for me to play

That's a lot of information and a good entrance. I would LIKE to think that many of these developers are starting to shift more resources to the Wii. EA is starting to put out a lot of quality stuff for the Wii. Capcom is and I believe that Sega is actually doing there best. Lets hope that everyone's worries about Ubisoft are just that. I believe we'll see a huge jump in 3rd party games because they will have to start taking it more seriously if they want to make money. That's the language that all developers understand.

Nice first post. Welcome to VGC.

Welcome to the forums. While I kind sorta kinda see where you're coming from, I would like to remind you that the Wii was not supposed to be the market leader, and that developing a game for the system takes years. This is exacerbated by the fact that most of the more talented development teams are already sunk into producing HD games. So it's no real surprise that the major third parties have put disproportionate efforts on those consoles.

All I can say is that my reading of the situation shows things are turning around (and more quickly than I expected). While I could be wrong, I'm fairly confident that we'll be seeing more high-quality Wii games from third parties soon, from the smaller developers to the Big Three.

I would also like to add that metacritic, gamerankings, and the like are probably not the best way to gauge quality: the reviewers they rely on are almost exclusively young males who are really into a certain segment of gaming, and their opinion may not mesh with yours (it certainly doesn't mesh with mine.)

Again though, welcome to the forums.

Thank you all very much!

I think the situation will change, its just a matter of time, and as noname2200 said, reviewers tend to take off points based on their tastes, rather than objectively judging the game. Still I think most of the games released so far on the Wii from 3rd parties are disappointing, situation needs to change. I agree there's a lot of good games coming, but not from the big guys, a lot coming from the smaller devs.

I always ask to myself, what is needed for the big 3rd party devs to realize there's a huge userbase willing to play good games, that we are not all casual or misinformed gamers?

I loved my GC for that reason, but now the Wii is seen as a much more kiddie console than GC was, 3rd party devs are killing the hardcore fanbase on the Wii, it's like they are forcing people to buy another console, and a lot of opportunities will be missed. Imagine all of the great games that could be made if a little effort is put.

Please 3rd party devs dont take the Wii as a gimmick or a cash cow. Dont rush your games, if you need time take it, but give us great games with great control implementations and great story, polished, and we will play them. We're just waiting for it to happen.

Very much welcome to the forums.

Nice first post, although I've seen a bit too many people jumping on the 3rd party sucks bandwagon. That's my problem though, not yours.

But this is how I see it:

1) Gamecube was like a disease to 3rd parties. The install base was too low to really compete with Nintendo's software. A lot of 3rd party devs therefore stopped making games for it, exclusives were very rare.
2) After Nintendo reveiled the Wii, no-one actually thought it would be a success. PS3 would hands down win this gen and 360 would be a decent 2nd.
3) The two above reasons explain why no 3rd party actually planned to bring anything decent to Wii.
4) It's only little over a year that it became clear that Wii wasn't a simple fad, but something much more than that. Only then began developers to realize the potential. In order to profit from its success a lot of ports were released, because that's the only thing they could get ready in such a short time.
5) A good game takes about 2 years to make. So the big quality games will come earliest next year. We have seen some of these already. Monster Hunter 3, MadWorld, Spyborgs, Fragile. Expect a lot more.

In the meantime some very promising 3rd party titles will see a release. Fatal Frame 4, Rygar, the Conduit (first a port, now got a year extra development time), Tales of Symphonia 2, de Blob, Tenchu, Oboro Muramasa, Project O.

It's also important to acknowledge that for most devs the PS3 and 360 is a single platform. Combined it still has the majority of the marketshare. And all the big projects were originally planned for PS3/360.

I wouldn't worry too much, there's a lot on its way. Much and much more 3rd party support than GC ever saw. And the Nintendo games are until now all better than their GC versions.
