Forums - Sales - metal gear really a system seller or a niche product with a loyal following

The_vagabond7,+1 for you.

Basically, it should be a nich product (except MGS1 that appealed to more people as it was a new IP with no fan base)
BUT
this generation, MGS4 has been hyped a lot, there is a bundle, a 80gb reintroduction in US, the game is good (not 10/10 but still very good), it is more action and less snaking (= more appealing) so I believe it will sell even for people who dont know the MGS serie very well.

 *cough*Metal Gear on NES*cough*

Aurally examine my music!

Wear gaudy colours or avoid display. It's all the same.

Be warned, I will use walls of polysyllables and complex clauses as a defence against lucid argument.

Wand to read a creepy thread?

i dont really believe in system sellers. i see it as more of a "breaking point".

its when you break and go out to buy a ps3 or a x360 or a wii since its accumulated enough games you find worth the purchase.

for me, its gta4 and mgs4. since both were coming out i went out and got a ps3 a few weeks before gta4 launched. i figured, i can play gta4 until mgs4 comes out. plus there's already a nice liblary of games that i need to buy and play which would be enough to hold me over until ffxiii, tekken6 and gt5.

mgs 4 won't be a system seller, cause 90% people who will buy this game already have ps3.

If any of the industry heads believed that (90% of all people planning on buying MGS4 already have a PS3), then there would be absolutely no point in making it the new 80GB bundle game.

That would mean that they are simply planning on "giving the game away" to people who had no interest in buying the game and are presumably just buying the more expensive 80GB model for a larger HDD and partial PS2 BC. Would that really make sense? To anyone?

MGS is not a niche game, and it is a system seller. Not to the level of say a final fantasy, Super Mario or Halo, but still a system seller.

What MGS is though (and what causes confusion I guess) is that it is as core as a core game gets. This is not a casual friendly game, unlike alot of core titles that can be played by the casual gamer. Heck I've seen a casual gamer pick up and play splinter cell, yet I was frustrated beyond belief when I played MGS1 for the first time (granted I was like 12).

I guess you could call it a niche game if you consider the core gamer market to be a niche market of gaming now (which thanks to the Wii that is not such a wild comment to make).

@Colonelstubbs: Careful there, you may create a postwhore with that last comment :)

I like your definition of core game... but i still dont see how that sits with it being a system seller? I would have thought those type of core gamers already owned a PS3??

Depends on whether you believe in the theory "there are still many gamers content with the PS2 who are holding out to see a) who the winner will be and b) when a price drop will make HD consoles affordable".

I do believe that theory considering there's at least 10 million PS2 owners (most likely more) out there that have only had their console for a few years and are not ready to trade up yet.

Then take into account MGS fans that bought Wii's and 360's, I've seen at least 10 people on this forum alone that have said MGS4 would be a game that would swing them to the PS3. While this may not be true for everyone, there's bound to be a large number of people in that boat.

Last generation saw (very) roughly 180 million consoles be put through the register before it ended, so this generation has a long way to go before it hits anywhere near that mark, so there's got to be games out there pushing the sales figures and I'd say MGS is one of them (particularly in Japan).

IF GTA4 didn't move a significant number of consoles, there's no way that MGS4 can. And yes, it is niche in some respects. 90 minute cutscenes don't appeal to mainstream gamers.

Deleted: Wow, that was one of the most retarded posts I had ever written. I destroyed it and rewrote:

MGS4 is a niche game in concept, not sales.

The game will appeal to everyone on the interent who have heard fans of the series talk about how amazing it is, because the PS3 gamers on the interent don't have much choice in the games they play, like they did in the PS2 era, so this will be the best selling MGS game.

However, it will also be the most hated, because it is selling to a wide, varied audience, that aren't entirely in its target market. The story and gameplay will immediately confuse and frusterate those who buy this game expecting a Splinter Cell type experience. This simply isn't that type of game. In fact, you can't know what type of game this is unless you've played another MGS game in the past.

Those new to the series(a larger number than ever before) will have mixed feelings about the game. It certainly isn't for everyone, and anyone who believes it is probably has never played MGS 2 or 3 before.

It's like someone expecting a FFVII esque jrpg and buying Disgaea. The same as someone expecting a stealth-shooter and buying MGS4. Sure, Disgaea and MGS4 are great and amazing games. However, purchaser beware, these games aren't akin to other games in their supposed genres. The are completely quirky, slow paced, plodding, strategic, and wonderful, but odds are you're not gonna get what you expect, and you might just end up quitting and/or hating the game completely.

As for fans of the series, no game can really touch the excellence of the first time we played Metal Gear Solid for PSX. However, this is the ultimate end to our(not the) untimate gaming experience that is metal gear solid. Can't wait to get my hands on it and drop a foxhound rank on my second playthrough.

If you're new to the series, then do yourself a favor and play MGS 1 and 3 first. Then you will be ready to play MGS4. If you don't, there is a significant chance you will be ruining 3 amazing games for yourself, for all time. Be warned.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

You don't think that platform exclusivity has anything to do with increased hardware sales?

So you're saying that MGS4 on the PS3 would sell no more consoles than if MGS4 were debuting on both the 360 and PS3.

Just clarifying that.

If we see a significant spike in PS3 hardware sales the week of June 12th, you can still fall back on the claim that all those people were just waiting for the return of the 80GB model because they all wanted PS2 BC, but that would be the thinnest of arguments.

If the 80GB MGS4 bundle doesn't move, then consider the game a marginal hardware seller at best.

80GB ps3 will be selling, because of BC and not because it will be bundled with mgs 4. most people(including me) who want to buy ps3 are waiting for price drop and BC.

By the time we see a $299 MSRP, BC won't even be a selling point bullet anymore. It will be a revised version of the 40GB, meaning no PS2 BC unless they find a way to emulate the GPU via software; not even worth their effort.

The 80GB, or whatever it's replacement will be, if they even keep the SKU, will be a predictable $399.

If you're holding out on a MoBo like the 60GB at $299 or less, I would recommend just not buying a PS3 at all or buying a used one in a year or two on Ebay because in all likelihood, it will never happen.

BC will matter less as the PS2 continues to slide into obsolescence. The typical consumer won't even care by then. Even comparing recent 40GB sales with 80GB Motorstorm sales, numbers say the typical consumer already doesn't care.

So consider yourself among a minority that will probably won't be catered to.
