MGS4 is a niche game in concept, not sales.

The game will appeal to everyone on the interent who have heard fans of the series talk about how amazing it is, because the PS3 gamers on the interent don't have much choice in the games they play, like they did in the PS2 era, so this will be the best selling MGS game.

However, it will also be the most hated, because it is selling to a wide, varied audience, that aren't entirely in its target market. The story and gameplay will immediately confuse and frusterate those who buy this game expecting a Splinter Cell type experience. This simply isn't that type of game. In fact, you can't know what type of game this is unless you've played another MGS game in the past.

Those new to the series(a larger number than ever before) will have mixed feelings about the game. It certainly isn't for everyone, and anyone who believes it is probably has never played MGS 2 or 3 before.

It's like someone expecting a FFVII esque jrpg and buying Disgaea. The same as someone expecting a stealth-shooter and buying MGS4. Sure, Disgaea and MGS4 are great and amazing games. However, purchaser beware, these games aren't akin to other games in their supposed genres. The are completely quirky, slow paced, plodding, strategic, and wonderful, but odds are you're not gonna get what you expect, and you might just end up quitting and/or hating the game completely.

As for fans of the series, no game can really touch the excellence of the first time we played Metal Gear Solid for PSX. However, this is the ultimate end to our(not the) untimate gaming experience that is metal gear solid. Can't wait to get my hands on it and drop a foxhound rank on my second playthrough.

If you're new to the series, then do yourself a favor and play MGS 1 and 3 first. Then you will be ready to play MGS4. If you don't, there is a significant chance you will be ruining 3 amazing games for yourself, for all time. Be warned.
