By the time we see a $299 MSRP, BC won't even be a selling point bullet anymore. It will be a revised version of the 40GB, meaning no PS2 BC unless they find a way to emulate the GPU via software; not even worth their effort.
The 80GB, or whatever it's replacement will be, if they even keep the SKU, will be a predictable $399.
If you're holding out on a MoBo like the 60GB at $299 or less, I would recommend just not buying a PS3 at all or buying a used one in a year or two on Ebay because in all likelihood, it will never happen.
BC will matter less as the PS2 continues to slide into obsolescence. The typical consumer won't even care by then. Even comparing recent 40GB sales with 80GB Motorstorm sales, numbers say the typical consumer already doesn't care.
So consider yourself among a minority that will probably won't be catered to.
