Forums - Gaming - Good storyline anyone?

A videogame storyline is a three-edged sword: Many simple games have no need for it, the biggest epics won't work without it, and most games are somewhere in the middle.

Although a story can enhance a game significantly when done right, it's not necessarily integral for a great gaming experience - there are many top-notch games that have complex plotlines, and there are great games that have either paper-thin storylines or none at all.

I play both story-free and story-heavy games.

Storyline is important, graphics are great, replay value is important...

but nothing is as important as gameplay.

Killzone had an awesome storyline IMO, but the gameplay made it impossible to play.

The story has to complement the gameplay. Depending on how serious the gameplay is, so is the story. Or, that might not be the case at all.

Story won't matter if you don't want to play the game. Graphics make a story more immersive, and gameplay more believable.

Very complicated stuff.......

Story > gameplay. I'm surprised I'm saying this but this is how it seems to be. Great gameplay without a good story feels a bit empty. However, great story with at least decent gameplay is better overall. Still, these two are probably the most important single factors in a game. Oh, not to forget atmosphere and sounds (no sounds > bad sounds though). Atmosphere, in fact, is very important. Possibly goes even over story, somehow.

It all comes down to personal preference, of course, but I'd actually argue the opposite. Some of my favorite games had roughly zero story (puzzle games, Mario, Sim City, etc.).  On the other hand, a game with a fantastic story but crappy gameplay leaves me wanting to stop playing, as I can already get much better stories in movies, books, the theater, and other venues. So for me, good gameplay trumps good story, although having both is, of course, preferred.

Can you explain to me how exactly TP and Uncharted had a good storyline?

Are you one of those people who think that a story must be complex/deep to be good?
