A videogame storyline is a three-edged sword: Many simple games have no need for it, the biggest epics won't work without it, and most games are somewhere in the middle.
Although a story can enhance a game significantly when done right, it's not necessarily integral for a great gaming experience - there are many top-notch games that have complex plotlines, and there are great games that have either paper-thin storylines or none at all.
I play both story-free and story-heavy games.
