Forums - Sony - What the hell is going on with the PS3?

they've already made enough money on this concole war really, blu ray in the ps3= victory in the format war

 I wouldn't say that massive profits from Bluray are a foregone conclusion. The market hasn't really taken off since HD-DVD packed it in, and disc media is in danger of being disrupted by online distribution. Sony has invested a lot in the technology, and would certainly gain a great deal if it did take off, but it's just too soon to be sure that it will.

And it would need to be profitable enough to offset, what, $5 billion or so in Playstation losses?

@bdbdbd Sure some companies as a whole aren't doing so hot, but how many have gone bankrupt this gen? Any? Fact is, companies are losing money in some area's and gaining it just fine in others, and there is NO question that there are more game devs this generation than seemingly ever before, the projects are just infinitely more complicated and the budgets are bigger than ever. For every large scale flop that attempts to put the industry in a coma, there seems to be a COD4, Assassins creed, and GTA waiting to shock the shit out of it lol. I'd say were doing fine so far :P

And if the PS4 DOES use the Cell tech, it may not be the easiest to develop for, but it could very well be the cheapest, you wouldn't have to re-build engines from the ground up, merely expand upon them, and that would be fantastic for game development.

None have bankrupted, but what have happened is, that atleast Sony and Sega have closed studios, quite a few companies have been bought out, or merged with another and a lot of them are just making losses. That tells that the industry isn't doing good. Then the games example brought up 2 big problems: reliance on sequels (although seeing Assassins Creed selling good is a good sign) and the reliance on blockbusters. Neither is a good sign. You see HD is the end of gaming as we know it. Well, you know, if Wiis and 360:s successors are based on similar tech as Wii and 360, same goes for them; no completely new tools needed. If (and it's propable) Wiis successor is uses a single processor, it's going to be cheaper to develope than PS4 if it uses Cell.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I still think their biggest post-launch mistake was removing BC. I believe it's one of the factors that led to decline of sales in Japan. To be a total entertainment machine, you've got to play all the entertainment, not just some of it.

 I believe the biggest mistake Sony made with the PS3 was the high inital/current price point of the PS3 , Blu-Ray drive ,  Wi-Fi , BC , Hard Drive the PS3 could have done witout all of these , Sony could have sold them as add ons.(although Sony may stand to gain more from the success of Blu-Ray in the long term).

 it's this generations most expensive console with less software support than it's main competitor ( which is also half the price of the PS3 in europe ) , the Sony Brand , future and current exclusives , functionaility of the PS3 has enabled it to stay in the race.

Sony's PS3 is really advanced for now maybe for the tech they could have launched it this year allowing developers more time and they were sort of rushed by M$ and then Nintendo and they didn't want all the hype to go to M$.

I'm thinking what would have happened if Sony launched the PS3 last Christmas time, it would have definitaly curbed Halo sales and given developers enough time and had more launch titles, but what ever.

Sony hasn't given up.

@Imperial

no doubt PS3 success so far has shown us how POWERFUL the PS brand really has been...even though some people say the Ps brand has gone down due to sales...I think the way the PS3's doing now is a testimony to the fact that it still stands strong..

However next month Ps3 will be a worthy enough console to own, exclusives wise

Whole-heartedly agree.

Once the PS3 cures cancer everything will be fine.

It *is* contributing enormously as we speak.

The Stanford researchers just gush about PS3's contribution, and folding@home distributed network is way more powerful than any supercomputer on Earth now that PS3s have come into the group.

I really love the idea of ordinary people's idle processors helping out with tasks like this.

@DmeisterJ

but why??

would 20K sales in NA be justifiable for keeping in BC??

or 50K sales in EU??

in comparison to lost Japan sales which wouldn't go over 20K in any case anyway

Im just pissed that besides ff13 and ffv13 they have little to no rpgs of qulaity to show for. White story may be good as well but sony seriously needs to get their shit together.

People who are worried about Sony just chill they are doing fine, not as great as they could but they are doing well, it is just a problem for the short term. Look into the long term picture as of now Nintendo and M$ have no tangible long term approach. Nintendo does to a degree but M$ just doesnt and once it gets maxed out PS3 will dominate just so long as every month it can outsell 360 as it has for a while now.
