I believe the biggest mistake Sony made with the PS3 was the high inital/current price point of the PS3 , Blu-Ray drive , Wi-Fi , BC , Hard Drive the PS3 could have done witout all of these , Sony could have sold them as add ons.(although Sony may stand to gain more from the success of Blu-Ray in the long term).
it's this generations most expensive console with less software support than it's main competitor ( which is also half the price of the PS3 in europe ) , the Sony Brand , future and current exclusives , functionaility of the PS3 has enabled it to stay in the race.
