Forums - Sales - PS3 Price drop impossible?

I think once the PS3 is using the 45nm cell and 65nm RSX that would really reduce the prices of the PS3, enough that Sony would be able to justify a price-drop i would think.

They also have been reducing the prices of the other components so it wouldn't shock me if they started to make a profit on the PS3, once these changes happen, and then a few months down the line issue the price-drop breaking even on each console sold! That would make sense :D

The price of chips don't just magically fall due to manufacturing size decreases.  You don't see the return on investment on the equipment until at least a year into production.  Toshiba is going to need to fill half the fab with another product or the 10 million or so chips that Sony needs each year isn't going to turn any profits for Toshiba.

The chips SHOULD allow Sony to use less parts to cool their PS3 though which will definately help, just don't expect to see a price decrease based solely on cpu and gpu manufacturing, it just doesn't work that way.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

im sure there will be a PS3 price cut, but not before late 2008, they have enough big releases before then to build up momentum going into the holiday period, they will then use a price cut to get a lot of holiday sales.

if ps3 drops to $300 this year i'd probably buy one.

You can already get a 40GB for that if you go to sonystyle and sign up for their credit card. Its a simple process and you get $100 off. Its the only reason I own a PS3.

Also, standalone players are already dropping to the $300 price point. See the other threads about the new Walmart player. The more standalone players that sell, the more the price of producing the BR drives will go down. I see a pricecut either holiday 2008 or spring 2009.

Getting a credit card just to save a couple bucks is not very wise. I hope people don't follow you're advice because this is how people get into credit trouble. You don't get an 800 credit rating by doing this, and that's what I have.

My credit is equally good.  I just got it for the PS3, paid it off, and now I don't use it anymore.  If you have a little self-restraint, then there is really no issue here.  It helps you rating if you show that you can be responsible with your credit cards.  As long as you aren't a moron and just spend it because you have it, it won't hurt your rating at all.

Every time you apply for a credit card, your credit score gets lowered a little.

What the hell is your credit score?

I accidentally applied for a credit card (at the time I didn't really know what one was, I thought I was getting a store card) however I paid it off and haven't touched it since.

I have no other credit cards.

Huh??  That's just not true.  Having alot of credit and being responsible with it will actually raise your score.  You don't want to get too many cards, but you can also cancel them anytime.

My point was you can get the sony card, buy the PS3, pay it off, and then cancel the card.  If your capable of following through, then there is no reason not to save the $100.

Your credit score is what banks use to help them determine if they should lend you money.  Its especially important when its time to get a mortgage or even a car loan.

Just having the card won't affect your credit score if you don't use it.

Few things:

They haven't and won't rule the possibility simply because its foolish to eliminate options when you have no forced reason to do so. It's certainly low on their priorities right now but things can change and change quickly when they do.

When they do cut price it won't be $100 (like I've been saying for about 6 months now). It will likely be a $50 cut.

Spot on. Arrogance and over reliance on perceived brand loyalty has severely harmed them... speaking as a PS1 and PS2 owner.

"The next gen starts when we say so" that was just so embarrasing.

Christ did they really say that?

Yes, here is a link to an article that credits Ken Kutaragi as the lucky winner of a "Foot-In-Mouth" Award.

That's just flat out wrong. Every time you apply for a card, it creates an inquiry in the system. These inquiries lower your score.

Also, even if you don't use the card at all, the system treats it as open credit. Too much open credit also lowers your score.
