DRJ said: It may have been better for Sony to delay their launch even further, but there is no way they could give MS a 2 year head start. And to everyone that thinks a couple games are going to drastically increase sales and sustain those new levels, that just won't happen. There are small bumps but the individual games don't effect too much. Halo 3 will not help MS with sales too much. That game targets all of their current customers. Most people that want Halo already have a 360 and several other FPS games alread, imo. Home will not help PS3 sell better. Asside from the .0001% of gamers that come to gaming forums, the rest of the people out there don't know about it, and if they did wouldn't care about it. Brawl and Galaxies may only bump Wii sales slightly, if at all, since it is still supply constrained and likely will be until next year. PS3 doesnt have any time to "warm up". They cant get outsold by about 800k/month (while Nintendo is still upping shippments) until 2009, then magically come out with a couple games and start selling well, by then it wont matter, and those killer games that are 3rd party will be on the 360, Wii, or both anyway. |
They were screwed either way.
Delaying a launch that was already delayed was a bad move.
The fact that they blew it with the PAL let me know they had no chance (well I knew that anyhow but that was final confirmation). All I waited to see was if Sony's loyalties in Europe and elsewhere in the PAL's were as strong as fabled. When this didn't pan out it was just more confirmation for me.
They were injured going in but the extra delay on Europe & friends sealed their fate. They couldn't launch any later than they did or they wouldn't even have what they have now!
They really shoulda strung something together for Europe & friends just to save face and hold momentum. Something anything. 10,000 units and work on spreading the wealth.
By letting Wii get away with their built momentum and letting XBox 360 extend their headstarted one further, PS3 just created unnecessary obstacles to holding their marketspace.
It's a good thing XBox 360 is still flubbing some regions and Wii hasn't fully spread its wings yet (yes Wii has only gotten started with the domination) or PS3 would be in worse shape. Their best chance is to go for Distant #2 spot beating out 360. If they can't do that, then well...just keep your eyes on 2009 and become Virginia asking if there's a PS4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yes,_Virginia,_there_is_a_Santa_Claus).
People are just going to have to understand. The race is decided early. The only time there's room for undecided outcomes is when both competitors are comparatively close and a big gulf doesn't separate the two. Other than that, YES, you CAN see the outcome of the generation in 6 months.
The pecking order has already been set. The March to April period proved it.
