The Wii is picking up more speed and will end up being number 1 of this gen without much doubt.
But :
- Sales of the others consoles are not slowing down as the Wii sales pick up, they are actually picking up too ( when the PS2 started to pick up steam, the Gamecube and Xbox sales started to tank).
- So far despite being number 1 the Wii is actually getting less multiplatforms games/third parties games than the Gamecube was getting last gen.
What this means and what the fact that the HD consoles sales are not slowing down seems to indicate is that the Wii doesn't compete as much with the HD consoles as you would think it does.
It does competes heavilly for the first console buy, for many people if they can only afford one console now, the Wii is the choice.
But as time pass and they see more and more decent games than they would like to play not being ported to their platform some of them start considering a second console purchase and I believe when this gen is over and we look back at the number we will realize that this is the gen with the most dual console owners ( a Wii and another HD console).
What is still in the air is how much games for their HD consoles and how much games for their Wii these dual console owners will buy and is it possible that despite being 2nd and 3rd Sony and Microsoft( in no particular order, am not trying to offend fan boys) might end up moving more software than Nintendo...
Edit: Fixed the Gamecube/N64 confusion
