It’s usually a little rare that I have the feeling. The vast majority of games I play I normally can’t get enough of, even if they are extremely long like Witcher 3, any Xeno game, or Breath of the Wild. Even games where I despise some element of the gameplay (like the puzzle-like chains and combos in Xenoblade Chronicles 2) tend to be games I want to keep playing because of other elements done well or extremely well.
I suppose the only games that really jump out at me are in two of my favourite franchises of all time: Final Fantasy 5, 9, Dragon Quest 6, 7, and 8. These are all games that mostly spin their wheels on character growth and development, and don’t have much driving the plot beyond circumstance. While it’s true the older games in these franchises have these same weaknesses, they also don’t overstay their welcome by stretching out the games… like FF5 is a better game than 3 in many ways, but it also pads out the story like 5 times longer than that one without having much of anything meaningful happen… To put it another way, FF5 about triple the length of FF4 and about a third as much stuff happens in it. In fact, FF5 feels primitive to 4 in every way except graphics (the background art in FF5 is, IMO where it shines).
All those games, IMO, share common issues: story feels repetitive and incidental rather than driven. They don’t necessarily do things worse than the oldest games in the franchise other than padding it out way-way too long. On the other hand, all those franchises already had more modern feeling entries behind them in terms of character depth and character driven storytelling (Final Fantasy 4 and Dragon Quest 5). The difference is Square eventually moved to Final Fantasy 6, and Enix seemed to be stuck.
Granted, I don’t think these older style non-story driven games are necessarily bad, I just can’t stay interested in them longer than about 15 to 20 hours; other players have loads of fun with them and actually hate games where story gets too complex or characters have negative emotional depths that cause conflicts. So, it’s a taste thing.
