We'd be seeing high numbers across the board if that were the case and we're not. |
Hasn't the PS2 sold much more total software then the Cube and the Xbox?
Probably not 5X but i'd guess... a lot more.

The site does not track all the sales for the PS2, so our PS2 charts seem really low. There are also alot more used games for the PS2 at blockbuster or ebgames/gamestop then there were for box/Gamecube, along wth the higher casual audience that would rather rent games for the system then buy them. This would lower the sales for the PS2 software over all.
I'm also not sure how many units of software the xbox shipped but both the PS2/Gamecube have about a 10 game ratio per system sold. The PS2 was also replaced by alot of people so this makes the games sold per system for the PS2 just that much more amazing.

I don't think that matters. I think the only number a game developer cares about is the projected sales of their game rather than all games on the platform put together.

So your argument isn't that the PS2 has a high install base but that X% of those are replacements?
Why does that feel so ironic...
One of the reasons the PS2 couldn't take advantage of the whole userbase was because of the replacements/second consoles.
but there's a more important reason why, it's simply because the userbase is too diverse that a single game cannot reach the audience. When the PS2 userbase went from 70-120 million, I don't think it made any more than a slight difference on how much a game like final fantasy sells, but it probably made a significant difference on how a game like DDR sells.
currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X
GT5:P sales almost as good (and still selling) as GT4:P sales.
could this translate to GT5 sales higher than GT4 sales??
lol that's awesome......
How can people really believe... there are actually 120 million PS2 working in the world..... i don't have a single friend that bought less than 2 PS2.... don't flame right away.... I'm not saying it's because they all broke (some did) but you have also the guy leaving the parents' house to go to college or something.... letting the PS2 to the young brother and buying a new slim one for his dorm.... you have people who just want a slim one..... or many other possible situation where PS2s are bought but they virtually don't gain a new user.....
and on top of that you have to consider that you can get a used game for cheap after a while so there is no point to buy a brand new one... or they are not even publishing the game anymore.... all those second hand games are not counted.....
so why those number don't change a lot... well because the actual install base is way behind the sales number... and because game sales are just for brand new games.... put that together and you have that weird result.. but when you think about it, it's logical....
off topic : it could be interesting to ask on the sony forum, how many PS2 people bought and why?

It certainly will. There are far less games to choose from on the PS3, therefore, any decent game that comes along sells like it's got freakin' Mario in the title.
I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.
NO NO, NO NO NO.
...
Before people look at Xbox vs. PS2 games sales remember its 800-odd Xbox games vs. approx-2000 PS2 games ...
Also all game sales have their limits ... and remember the more copies sold = the more 2nd hand copies sold + more people lending games + more people playing games at friends places ... etc ...
i think this information does tell us Wii IS moving software. Xbox 360 > Xbox in software and hardware and PS3 is doing preety good vs. PS2 considering it no longer is the console to buy games on ... ( this is ofcourse considering series decline / sales continuing ( ie DMC4 is still selling , GT5:P still selling , CoD4 still selling, R&CF: ToD still selling .. )

To me, it's just a matter of having your cake and eating it too. It feels very ironic seeing the same people who rebuffed statements that the PS2 install base was actually smaller with a hefty number of replacements a year ago come back to say otherwise.
Whichever way the wind blows I suppose...
