Forums - Sony - ITS OVER Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical game disc production in January 2028

I'm sorry. Only in the USA, Only PS5 games, Only Under a full moon, "Over 100,000", Only in the first half of the year and Only Retail outlets (so mail businesses don't count).

Does Circana want to move the goal posts any further? It's easy to see how you can force whatever mathematical distribution curve you want in order to cherry-pick your veiled data and tell the story you want.

Circana is both moving the goal posts and putting the ref's eyes out for good measure. God I hate misinformation on the Internet. =/

When you make it harder to buy physical there will be less physical sales, of course. So many games only release digitally, don't have the full game on disc, are on a key-card, etc. And don't forget: The PS5 is an expensive piece of hardware and there is a cheaper digital variant of it. This is even more true with the Series S. All these things combined push you towards digital sales. I own a Series S myself because it was on sale for 199€ a few years ago and I never would've shelled out the money for a Series X or PS5 with disc drive.

I don't think anyone is arguing that physical sales are the majority or that digital isn't important or that the PS6 will crash and burn because of this decision. But physical is still important and when people have the choice they often buy physical. Also, many people who prefer physical media have probably partially or completely switched to playing on Nintendo consoles. And the last time I checked, those were selling pretty well...

I don't think this bit is true, unless you mean going forward? In which case we'll have to see but I don't think people will switch so comfortable.

The PS5 remains a superior place for physical over switch 2, so there's no logic to why anyone would of prioroitised Switch 2 when you can still actually get most 3rd party games on Disc whereas you cant get most Switch 2 games on cartridge.

Switch 2 is selling great but third party games on PS5 are still selling significantly more than it, even when just looking at physical alone.

Very true because physical collectors don't like key cards.

I will say this again and will keep saying it until this digital to physical ratio bullshit stops and companies release those stats in a honest way.

If there are 5000games on psn and 3500 are DIGITAL ONLY,they still ad up with the digital vs physical.

It makes digital look SO MUCH BETTER because there is No other option for most of those games.
There is a valid reason sony doesnt actually release physical to digital stats on games that HAVE a physical release because it makes digital look a lot smaller then 85%

I mean, if someone still buys a a digital game in the absence of physical, they're still choosing digital over nothing. This shows that the lack of a physical release is not enough to deter them buying and playing a game.

Choosing digital over nothing =/= choosing digital over physical. Sony treats that cherry-picked 85% number as proof that consumers prefer digital. And on top of that they assume people will choose PlayStation digital over PC digital, if forced to go all digital.

But if all games had a physical option, would it be the same you think be honest?!

If sony would release actuall HONEST stats and say.

For the games that have both a physical and digital version 85% is digital.

Why dont they do that? I'll tell you.

Because it would prob be around 65-35 or 60-40 digital to physical, and thats a LOT of copies sold, sony doesnt want that.

No shit sherlock that small indie digital games are mostly not physical, but it should NOT be counted in the digital vs physical becauze thers isnt even a physical copy to buy, i truly hope you must be aware and understand that.

I meant both systems combined. All physical games on Switch 1 are actually on card. Switch 1 was heaven for physical game collection. But you're right, the effect was probably not that big and you're also right about game key cards for Switch 2 of course.

Guess I just never got in that situation, haha. Thanks for clearing it up! I own a lot of Switch 1 games and none of them was a code in box or required a download afaik. Guess I got lucky. I stand corrected!
