Forums - Gaming - Rank Ocarina of time, without bias and nostalgia

The level design, pacing and story are the best in any Zelda game. The graphics have aged but hold up better than most graphics from the time period. Up until 2007, I considered it the greatest game ever made. Then slowly but surely games that were better than it started to emerge. Even today I would consider it to be a solid 9/10 even for someone that doesn't like dated graphics. If Nintendo does this remake right, we may be looking at a whole new generation falling in love with this game.

My ranking system heavily weighs on innovation, so to me, it's a 10. When a game comes out and leaps forward to the degree that that game did, it's worthy of perfect scores.

Old but still the best. WW is good but short, unfortunately. I don't like TP and SS. BotW and TotK are modern and cool. But the "empty"-dungeons and those weapons breaking are really annoying.

N64 version is harder to go back to, however the 3DS version is superb.

I never got past the Dodongo Cavern on Wii VC in the N64 version. When I got the 3DS version in 2017 as an adult I beat it in a few months. It's still the best Zelda to me and ranks very high in my favorite games.

I can say Ocarina of Time 3D at least is the best Zelda game and one of the best games of all-time. I prefer it over the Wild duology.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 159 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million, then 161 million)

PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

In terms of game design it is excellent. The N64 version is extremely rough with it's 20fps cap. The 3DS version is great though.

It's almost flawlessly executed in my opinion and doesn't have glaring design flaws like BOTW.

Its very dated when it comes to visuals, gameplay and camera- but those are precisely the aspects i would assume the remake is gonna update to modern standards, so it ends up being a hard question to answer for me. If i were to judge it today as it released in 1998 it wouldnt be a good grade, cause again, its very dated.

Having that said, i like the classic dungeon style of OoT much MUCH better than i do Botw and Totk's shrines and beasts/temples, and its not even close. So ill be very much looking forward to this remake. Imo scenario/world design in OoT was/is one of the best the franchise has ever offered.

I know the 3D on the 3DS wasn't for everyone, but boy this game looked incredible with the 3D slider up

Since you asked for a ranking

  1. Botw/Totk
  2. Twilight Princess
  3. Majora's Mask 3D
  4. Ocarina of Time 3D
  5. Skyward Sword
  6. The Wind Waker

If you're asking for a rating maybe 8.5-9/10 for the 3DS version and a bit lower for the original.

It's not even my favourite Zelda, yet objectively I have to rank it as the greatest game of all time.

When it came out it was the closest thing ever to what we imagined at the time as "the perfect game". There is no other game in video game history that had an impact as massive as this one, that crystallized all of the players' dreams and wishes about the future of video games. The opinions were universal ; critics, casuals gamers, hardcore gamers, young and old, everyone was dithyrambic about this game, for good reasons.

It came at a crucial and UNIQUE time of video game history. A time we will probably never experience anything of that magnitude again : The transition from 2D to 3D. And while many companies struggled to transcend their IPs from 2D to 3D, Ocarina of Time gave a masterclass of creativity, game design, optimization, etc.It set the bar extremely high for all adventure games to come. And it may very well be the game that influenced subsequent games the most, i can't think of a better example.

10/10. Masterpiece. Legendary game.

It's an excellent game. I played it for time when I was an adult, so no childhood biased here. And, should I mention. I played on the original N64 hardware. Had no problems with visuals or mechanics
