Yes, because it's already hard for artists and animators to get work without companies taking the lazy route and just using AI. It's about taking the moral high ground.

Self driving cars don't use gen AI though, they don't need AI data centers. Before self driving cars smart traffic lights and alert systems can improve safety. And of course stimulating less driving will improve safety and the environment.

Last thing we need is make driving dependent on always online connectivity, by default it cannot be using data centers other than for traffic updates.

First off the website you are quoting can't even get the release year of the PS4 right. Just goes to show that the writer doesn't check her sources at all. Second off that's about 77 kilograms of CO2 per PS4 made (assuming their 8.9 billion number is even right.) To put that in perspective, that's the same amount of CO2 as driving a big dumb SUV or truck to work and back 25 miles each way for a week, per PS4 built. And guess what? Sitting at home and playing videogames instead of going out obviously reduces the miles you drive. Even if you only drive 5 miles less per week due to gaming, the PS4 would have paid its CO2 costs back in just a year. So much so that gaming reduces your cARbOn fOoTpRiNt drastically and thus gaming becomes a very green hobby. 

Seriously you need to sit down and do the math on these things. Don't just take whatever source you can find as gospel. This is just as bad as the dude that thought PS4 games were filling up thousands of landfills with used games. Then somebody did the math and it turned out to be one or two landfills worth of trash if you threw away every PS4 game ever made. 

Edit: Oh and gaming taking up 5% of household electricity when you include mobile games just proves my electricity usage point. Once you take out mobile phones and people trying to run a PC that needs 450 watts on a 450 watt PSU I bet that drops to 3%-4%.

Just like how you failed to put the carbon emissions into perspective you failed to put the rare earth mineral mining into perspective. Just one AI server tower uses over thirty times as many rare earth minerals as a game console. Probably 100 times more. The mining needed for a game console is nothing and so are the CO2 emisions. And you simply refused to acknowledge that electricity usage is a drop in the bucket compared to everyday energy use. It's a green hobby because it uses far less energy and materials than going out. 

A lot of "Environmental Sites" are funded by big oil to blame consumers for CO2. The website you relied on is probably one of them. Edit: Please stop with the pseudo-environmentalism, while trying to claim that others are pseudo-environmentalists. Carbon-footprint-style environmentalism articles reek of big oil influence. Stop using them.

What do you consider a green hobby?

For example what do you think the carbon footprint of gardening is. It involves a lot of driving to get materials / plants / dirt / tools. Gas / electricity powered tools. Lot of watering, yard waste that needs a place to decompose.
Research shows that food grown in home and urban gardens can be up to six times more carbon-intensive per serving than commercially grown produce.

To put that 77 kg of CO2 for producing a ps4 in perspective: The global mean emissions for one kilogram of beef from non-dairy beef herds is 100 kilograms of CO2eq. Skip a couple burgers and you have offset your PS4.

Yes it's better to be dead for the environment. Yet out of all the things you can do besides sleeping, gaming is one of the least harmful. The carbon footprint of running shoes is already avg 14kg, I guess I could run on bare feet, see how that goes lol. And no they don't last that long, I use about 3 pairs a year to keep up my running, as well as other clothes, more laundry, shower after. I do start from home so no car trip involved. Probably makes me consume more food as well.

Up until recently this was true, but most SOTA self driving cars use models that have generative sub-components now.

Eventually, these self driving cars will all be networked together so that one car will know beforehand how to react. It will get even better.



On the topic of energy consumption, photonics and neuromorphic computing will largely solve that by 2030. I recommend this video on the advancements there. Note that one of the use-cases mentioned in the video are systems that can "see" tens of millions of times faster than humans. The two applications talked about are: 1. more accurate content moderation for things like CSAM so that humans don't have to watch it and 2. Nuclear fusion confinement using very fast acting adjustments to electromagnetic fields.
