Forums - Gaming - Let’s Talk About Hype Culture in Gaming (Nintendo Directs, Sony State of Plays, Summer Games Fest, etc.)

I'm super excited about FE. Does that count for something?

Yeah it's important to remember that a lot of these complaints come from trolls and grifters just trying to stir the pot or get clicks.

I actually really enjoy getting hyped for upcoming games, it's exciting and fun, and Directs can be hugely enjoyable as a result, so I do understand the desire for one as I love them too.

At the moment I'm pumped for Pragmata soon, for 007 First Light and Indiana Jones next month, etc.

I find myself looking forward to these shows coz it lets me find upcoming smaller games that interest me that I can then wishlist. If I was left with just scrolling the PS store to find something to play I’d never buy a game, far to much slop to go through that i don’t even look at the new release section anymore.

As far as I can see, hype-culture has dwindled a lot in the past few years. I guess there have been too many disappointments and issues, but there's also the fact that games get "teased" a number of years before anything is actually shown. For bigger productions, they often "show" the first glimpses of the game 4-5 years before release, it's hard to keep people engaged for that long. I often hear people suddenly remembering that a game is in production when they show more tiny bits of it.

For my own part, I've learned to navigate the market by now and I know when to keep my expectations tempered. Most of the time, I look at what studio is behind it, and what talent is involved, as a sort of measuring-stick to gauge how interested I should be. One example is the upcoming "The Expanse: Osiris Reborn" from Owlcat Studios; everything they've released has been amazing, and they're sticking to what they do best (RPGs). For me, they're a modern-day Bioware, as Bioware were back in the golden age, what they've shown and told about the game has only added to my excitement.

I think hype died a bit for me, because hype is about strong anticipation for the next game release. My Steam wishlist is about 40 deep.. I tend to play games 12 months behind actual release dates. So hype isnt there, but it also isnt disinterest. Just more of, I will add it to the wishlist and play it some day.

(Only 40? Man… I already have over 60 in my Steam library. Lol!) I can relate to this somewhat, though Nintendo games are always a day one purchase for me. Yeah sure there are sales that hit every so often, but I don’t want to wait for Black Friday two years later to play half the games that are releasing.

Thats just fans in general, not just Nintendo fans.

Wheres the next Elder Scrolls Game? Why have we got no news of the next Witcher game? Why isnt Fromsoft doing Bloodborne 2? Whats Naughty Dog even doing their IPs? Why does the new Castelvania doesnt look good to me? Why is Marvel fucking up? Why was Sinner nominated so much? Why is everything so mid?

Deeply sorry for not appreciating our benevolent Nintendo as much as you feel is warranted.

If you don’t find the current line up of Nintendo games as being too appealing to your tastes, then I’m not gonna fight you on it. If, however, all you ever talk about is “I’m TERRIFIED that there won’t be another Nintendo Direct until June!!” or if you’re speaking on behalf of everyone with nonsense like “Nintendo Switch 2 has NO GAMES on the horizon!” then we’ve arrived at the topic of the OP.

Also: I would appreciate if you didn’t turn this thread into a personal conviction.

The thing is you are fighting me on it. Not me personally, but that seems to be the whole point of the thread. To complain that people are not as happy with the current state of gaming, and in particular with Nintendo's output, as you feel is warranted.

So, what kind of response are you hoping for other than the one I gave minus the sarcasm dripping off of it?

And the point you're making is kind of silly. People don't just want hype or directs. They want new games which is kind of a good thing, because the industry kind of dies if they don't. They know that, with Nintendo as the example, games are generally announced in directs before they are released. It's not the directs people want, that's just the next step in the process that ultimately ends with me playing a game. It's like if you're at a restaurant and you say "why doesn't the waiter come to our table already." You don't just really want to see the waiter (unless you're at hooters or something) that is just the next step in the food getting process.

I mean, if Nintendo just shadow dropped Smash tomorrow with no direct, I'd be happy with it, but that's not how the process plays out.
