As far as I can see, hype-culture has dwindled a lot in the past few years. I guess there have been too many disappointments and issues, but there's also the fact that games get "teased" a number of years before anything is actually shown. For bigger productions, they often "show" the first glimpses of the game 4-5 years before release, it's hard to keep people engaged for that long. I often hear people suddenly remembering that a game is in production when they show more tiny bits of it.

For my own part, I've learned to navigate the market by now and I know when to keep my expectations tempered. Most of the time, I look at what studio is behind it, and what talent is involved, as a sort of measuring-stick to gauge how interested I should be. One example is the upcoming "The Expanse: Osiris Reborn" from Owlcat Studios; everything they've released has been amazing, and they're sticking to what they do best (RPGs). For me, they're a modern-day Bioware, as Bioware were back in the golden age, what they've shown and told about the game has only added to my excitement.
