Because $1000 is too expensive for a mass market product.

iPhone sales beg to differ.

"As of early 2026, iPhone Pro and Pro Max models dominate Apple's sales, accounting for over 50% of new iPhone series purchases. With total annual iPhone shipments often exceeding 230 million units, this indicates well over 100 million Pro models are sold annually".

It's just a matter of priorities (and lack of cheaper alternatives of other platforms with similar performance).

People are willing to pay more for a phone than a console, or a car than a phone, or a house than a car!

Well the ps6 will be a ps5 pro pro.  It will have a more ram, better cpu and better gpu.  The ps5 was more powerful and more expensive than the ps4 pro...  why wouldn't the ps6 follow suit?

Because $1000 is too expensive for a mass market product. They can't possibly replicate PS5's success with that model. $1000 is an enthusiast device.

I hear you and see both sides.  But the ps6 cannot be weaker than the ps5, which costs money.

I think all their games will be cross generation and the ps6 will be a ps5 pro pro.  I don't see any other solution until prices come down.

The ram in my computer was $130 three years ago, now it is $450.  My M2 storage was $250 and now is $550...  Sony is in a difficult position.

The challenge is inevitable but there are ways to mitigate it, and prices might (hopefully) go down within 2 years.

PS5 Pro is intended to be sold to a small enthusiast playerbase at a profit. Whereas PS6, if it's anything like its predecessors, may be intended as a 80 million+ selling console, so they should be able to secure components at cheaper prices relative to their default value. They should also sell it at a loss or a minimal profit. Slashing storage capacity from 2TB on the Pro down to 1TB or lower should help reduce costs too.

Smartphones are FAR more essential to everyday life and usage than video game consoles.

Phones are used for EVERYTHING now. They're even a necessity depending on what job you have.

The amount of people who are willing to shell out $1,000 for a new iPhone or Samsung to manage their day-to-day lives far, far, FAR exceeds the amount of people who are willing to shell out $1,000 for a new console to play FIFA or Call of Duty.

People aren't a hivemind who all think the same.

Entry class smartphones are so good/performant these days for the usual tasks, I don't understand why so many people pay double/triple/4x/5x for a slightly better model.

On home consoles and handhelds I see the value of a new model which is multiple times as fast as the old model and supports the newest games.

People shape identity around brands. Apple brand power is phenomenal, although; anyone who identifies with a brand are morons.

Anyway, PS6 will be mega pointless and underused technically. PS5 cross gen will last for years, may as well not release it.

Millions would buy a PS6 at any price. But at a $1000+, the majority of Playstation gamers wouldn't upgrade. That would price out tens of millions.

Ok this is unrelated to price increase, but did Sony confirm that they abandoning PC or is it still a rumor?
I couldnt find it anywhere.
Also good luck to any PS6 owner, better save money because i highly doubt that PS6 will cost anything less then 800-1000e

What do people think the actual Bill of Components are for the PS5?

We don't know the specs or release date so it's pretty hard to say.
