Forums - Gaming - Nvidia reveals DLSS 5 , essentially applies AI filter to games in real time.

Guys chill I was just having fun lol. Not a fan overall of DLSS5, how it feels, and what it seems to promise, but I can see it and future iterations being useful tools IF used properly and by the artists themselves to match their intent and without plagiarizing the work of a different artist.

So far I'm not a fan of DLSS5... there is just a lot to worry about. It's computationally expensive and artistically bland and fake to my eyes even in the "good" examples. To say nothing about what AI is doing to component prices.

But I'm not an expert on AI and how it will evolve, so I don't have very strong opinions yet on many of its applications. I think it can be a wonderful tool for good, but big corpos will misuse it and fuck us up.

Is that an actual in game photo of the game with dlss or just a fake image though?

DLSS5. The person who posted it thought it looked better than the actual game. Not only are we seeing slop but as usual with AI morons, thinks slop looks better. That's the real danger.

I couldn't find any videos that showed DLSS 5 on this game so I went ahead and tested it out on my Own PC with each of the presets.

Natural Preset

Cinematic Preset

Default Preset

DLSS off

To me it looks like the poster of that image chose the worst preset being the Default one and messed with the settings to make it look as bad as possible. and then proceeded to edit the image to make it look worse because the whole face doesn't even resemble any of the images i posted.

This is VERY interesting in how drastic things change, but how little things did change according to NVIDIA. And I think the original poster should definitely update his post to make this clear: DLSS 5 is NOT touching the original models, polygons, textures or materials in ANY way. I already see a lot of people claiming they changed Grace's face (and others) with AI slop. And I get that, but that is not what is happening here. Just slapping on AI slop assets over the top would definitely be wrong.

DLSS 5 ONLY changes the the way lighting is hitting those original models/polygons/textures/materials. That's it. JUST the lighting.

And yeah - WOW, is there a massive change is how things look because of that.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it yet, but again, in the Grace example - THAT is her ORIGINAL face. Her lips, eyes, etc. - all that changed is how the lighting is reacting to those things. It really is crazy how different it looks.

If you think the only thing changing is the lighting and the AI isn't adding/editing elements of the model you're crazy

Looks like they're launching FP8 neural network version with performance impact from 50% to 60%. That's a disappointment, hopefully the performance can improve with next updates.

Cursed. Just as cursed as Kiryu

My god the AI Slop is strong.

Who could have guessed that copypasting the work-in-progress DLSS version from the ultra-realistic basketball game might not work in games with stylized graphics?

Have you seen what it did to the GTAV cast? It's not nightmare fuel but it's not good either.

It's funny that just two years ago it was a big deal that the PC version of NBA 2K was finally getting all the features that PS and Xbox have been enjoying for years, the previous games were simply incomplete on PC. And now the PC version is the flagship version being used for... that.

DLSS 5 uses FP8 so it should run fine on 40 series cards and hackers have made that possible already. Nvidia is gate keeping it on 50 series cards for now.

"IF used properly and by the artists themselves to match their intent"

the issue is that games already look as intended. This will just be used by studio heads to reduce the actual fidelity of the assets because "its fine DLSS 5 will fix it". And you'll just be left with worse quality. When we added bigger storage, studios decided to go away with storage optimisation. When we added OG DLSS performance optimisation dropped because "DLSS will give them more frames".

Every time we have good or bad innovations it's used to reduce the quality of the product to save money with the hopes the innovation brings it back up instead of improving the overall product.

Look at even consoles now, we moved to x86 in PS4/XB1 era to make consoles significantly easier to develop for compared to PS360 and prior, and we just ended up with less optimisation of hardware.

This depends on the studio and publisher. Not all developers and publishers are made equal, and not every large game file size is an issue of optimization. These advancements (not AI as a whole which remains to be seen) including ML upscaling were a net positive.

PS4/XB1 generation was a huge step up over PS360 era, and SSD which gen 9 standardized is godsent. Western developers getting worse has nothing to do with hardware advancements.

If AI can make an artist's vision materialize faster (like Photoshop and a million different apps), then I'm for it, but I recognize that it will probably be misused very often, leading to countless artists and developers losing their jobs just so the few on the top maximize their wealth.

AI has an unimaginable number of applications and some of them will be good.
