Forums - Sony - PS4 is still getting games in 2026

I feel sorry for the kids. When I was a kid, I got to see the game industry go from NES all the way to PS2 in a matter of just fifteen years. Creativity, innovation and technology were absolutely blazing, defining and then redefining what gaming meant, over and over and over again. It was truly astounding.

But these kids?

I mean... they're basically playing the same console from kindergarten all the way to high school. Compared to what I had, that's about as depressing as it gets.

Those technological and creative leaps were definitely not nostalgia. They were real, objective things. It happened.

PS4 was a great f***ing system.

More than 12 years after its release, Sony's last gen console still has a few notable games on the way this year; Mouse PI for Hire, Mina the Hollower, Ariana and the Eldar Codex, Bubsy 4D...

It has a 2027 release scheduled in Mega Man Dual Override.

That's the equivalent of say a PS1 game releasing in 2008, or the PS3 getting a mainstream release in 2020.

Well, with a digital store it is a lot easier to release a few titles per year for and older platform than for old consoles with only physical games.

But the PS1 also got a few games in 2008 and the years after that:

Interesting, were these official releases though, or were they unofficial/homebrew/etc, like how Dreamcast or NES still get new releases to this day but not actually through Sega/Nintendo?

Not just the PS4, even the Xbox One is still getting games. Shows how much better porting games is nowadays with similar hardware and people still gaming on last gen.

While DC/Genesis still get games that eventually come to modern platforms. Even professionally made stuff like Earthion. Still not official but crazy. PS2's last game was Fifa 14. 13 years so yeah PS4 getting games 13 years later and will beat PS2. Wii was 2019 or 2020 so 14-15 years. Dreamcast died early in 2001 but it's last offical game is in 2007. 9 years after launch in contrast with Saturns last game was 1998. PS5 will be getting new games in 2025 I have no doubt. Cross gen games of mid to AAA games until maybe 2034. Next gen is going to have the slowest adoption rate ever.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Impressive, although I believe previous consoles have also got new releases way after their follower launched. Anyway, PS5 is so expensive that there are probably still a lot of people that want to ugprade but haven't been able to do so. Since PS5 is able to play PS4 games, I'd say this is just expanding the potential audience - by releasing on PS4, you gain the audience of both PS4 and PS5. Of course the downside is that a PS4 game is probably much less marketable than a PS5 game, but if you're not going to properly utilize PS5, there's little technical reason to not release it as a PS4 game instead. I suppose if you also have a PS5 version and can release a PS4 version as well with little effort, it makes perfect sense to do so.

Not really. The follower of PS4 is the current main product of Sony and able to play PS4 games. The same can't be said about those two examples.

Was referring purely to chronological timeframe, not circumstances.

Definitely. I just wanted to point out there are differences as well, despite the similarities.
