Hardware wise and having to make a living entirely off games revenue, I mean. And no buying a company doesn't just retroactively give you credit to their past games or inventions. If MS bought Nintendo that wouldn't mean that you would be able to say that MS single handily saved the USA console market in the 80's. It doesn't work that way.

Perhaps so. I went to check Japanese launch prices for the PS1 and Saturn. Saturn was only 12.5% more expensive than PS1 in Japan. So I could see that being a big reason why Saturn didn't fail in Japan. That and having way more games in the JP market. Not being in North American Wal-Marts, Targets, Bestbuys, etc. still did damage though. I could see Saturn hitting 20 million units sold without that surprise launch. Sega eventually dropped the price and offered an amazing pack-in deal to move Saturns in the USA but by then many of the big retailers didn't have shelf space to carry it.
