I am not going to engage in a debate here, kids, but I will state it for the millionth time: the Switch was a handheld, not a dedicated home console. And since handhelds sell in orders of magnitude far better than dedicated home consoles in Japan, comparing the sales is about as logical as comparing motorcycles to cars.

Also, you can't compare the sales of machines that launched nearly a quarter century apart. The market has changed far too much for that to make sense.

They are videogame systems and we are on site that tracks these things with no distinctions of the form factor, it is how it is.

No matter how hard you try to spin it, numbers will speak for themselves

Ultimately, the title of "Best Selling Gaming Hardware of All Time" is arbitrary and only really matters to enthusiasts. That said, if Nintendo Switch does manage to beat PS2 LTD, then cool! If it does not, however, then okay. It's still number two, and coming off the Wii U/3DS years of Nintendo (back when their biggest hits were on iOS (Pokémon Go,. Super Mario Run, etc.) and niche collectibles (Amiibo, NES Classic, etc.)), there is no legitimate reason to be upset with this outcome.

In other words, "us".

The time for that is over. Nintendo could've sold a Switch TV for 100$ and cross the 160m, but now? Better sell Switch 2, more profitable per unit, and you don't need more RAM than you're able to acquire.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

This mindset is a good example of being in a bubble. The vast, vast majority of people who buy consoles would only care about a 9 year old console outselling a 26 year old one in a "that's neat" sort of way at most before immediately moving on. The impact on sales would be negligible the same way that Nokia having the best selling phone of all time does nothing for them cause only nerds like us care a lot about records like this. This is why Nintendo is no longer pushing the Switch 1 any more at all and just letting its demand quickly fall off since they want people to buy a Switch 2 instead now.

I would love a TV switch with some extra horsepower. I play my switch and S2 maybe 1% of the time handheld.

“Consoles are great… if you like paying extra for features PCs had in 2005.”

Console gaming on its own is a "bubble"... 😉

To further explained it.
I m hearing often "oh,Nintendo, they still make consoles? While Playstation is like a cultural thing, maybe in my country only, who knows.
However, i feel that's the situation in most secondary markets.
A grandma will consider first a Playstation as a gaming gift.
Well, in past, given how pricey are consoles now.
Just an example.

Think of the people who strongly care about this record as a miniscule bubble inside of that big bubble then.
