Nintendo actually has a really healthy balance in every market of the world. If one of their markets tanked, it would be doom for them. But if XBX lost America they would have nothing, if PS lost Europe they would be crippled. Nintendo, while they can do a lot better in other markets (especially Europe) they have the most balanced overall.

It seems Switch 2 will end the year having a little more than 50 % of PS5 install base in Japan, i wonder when the Switch 2 will overtake lifetime sales of PS5 in Japan?

My guess would be around October next year. Which would mean it would take 1 year and a few months after the launch of Switch 2 for it to happen.

Nintendo does have the most healthy balance between the regions but worth noting the majority of PS5 region sales are from the US, not Europe. Neither are dependent on any singular region. PS4 would be an xbox 360 level success without Europe

To add to this, Switch was the better selling console in east Asia outside Japan vs PS, while PS sold more in India, middle east and south America. Xbox was fairly unique in only selling strong numbers in a few countries.

I do wonder how much of an impact a portable variant could have on the PS5's future in Japan. It won't necessarily negate the software preferences of the region but it may make hardware more appealing and thus shift software dynamics. Also if the S2 is able to generate more interest in certain franchises like RE/Final Fantasy, that may be a raising tide for other third party titles on playstation to be seen as more appealing.

It'll be interesting to see how things unravel down the road but I think the next year or so won't see much shake up other than Nintendo continually dominating with the established IP. Will be interesting to see how games like Pragamata, RE and FF do on S2.

Just realised Metroid Prime is out. One of the rare Nintendo IPs that is dependant on the west. JP clearly doesn't appreciate the first person perspective much

This will be the 3rd year ever in Japan where PlayStation systems (combined) sell less than 1 million. Last time was 2020 where the PS4+PS5 sold 828k for the year. Looks like the PS5's lifetime sale will be less than PS4 at around 8-8.2 million.

When the more affordable PS5 Japan edition dropped, there was an uptick. I really thought PS5 could still hit 1 million this year.

Alas that uptick only lasted 3 weeks. Now it seems that 1 million is indeed probably not going to happen.

I have to wonder if this is related to the news that Capcom's next 2 big games (RE9, Pragmata) will also come to Switch2?

That certainly didn't help PS5, but I feel the primary reason it can't maintain momentum is still the same as ever, that PS5's exclusives just don't resonate with the Japanese audience in the way that Nintendo's do.

If the Switch 2 wasn't newly launched, things may be different but alas the PS5 may actually be attractive to many consumers at that price but still not as enticing as a S2.
