- In this ‘90s first person shooter, you need to collect ancient artifacts that then enable you to revisit levels to reach previously inaccessible areas and level exits.
- This game went by different names depending on the region it was released in. The 2022 remaster combined both titles in a clever way.
- One rumoured reason for the name change in one region was legal action by the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, who had an ‘80s album of the same name. The album sleeve, much like this game, also had an ancient Egyptian theme.

Final Fantasy VII remake is my highest new game this year, I was tempted to put it all the way up at #7 for thematic reasons, but I decided that was a bit of a stretch even if most parts of the game are that good. I always thought the game looked better than people gave it credit for and I finally picked it up when I got a PS5 (wanted the best possible experience for this one) and yeah, it’s better than people give it credit for. Aside from a few questionable story changes I would consider it one of the best games ever made - combat, music, graphics and character interactions are all worthy of the highest possible marks and it has the advantage of building upon a gaming legend so you already know and love the characters and the setting from the get-go and that love only increases that with how exceptionally it adds to it. If I liked the cast of FF7 before, it's one of my absolute favorites across gaming now. There are undeniably some small blemishes and I could write pages and pages on the decision to let the Kingdom Hearts director rewrite Square’s greatest story (it’s better than you’d expect so far, but he did straight up add in-world Deus Ex Machina as a story mechanic), but this is still hands down the best gaming experience I’ve had since my list last year.

Just a wholesome game about literature, nothing to see here. While most might write it off due to its nature as a novelty game, DDLC stands out for me and one of the most powerful gaming experiences I've had and one of the games that gets closest to perfection in accomplishing what it sets out to do.

#22 - Powerslave? (I only know Iron Maiden has an album with that name, and I think I recall seeing that name on the spreadsheets over the years of hosting this )

You are correct on 22 and 19. 22 was indeed a reference to Iron Maiden's (superb) album Powerslave. The game was called Exhumed in PAL regions, and the recent remaster was called Powerslave Exhumed, which was pretty clever as in a way, Nightdive Studios were exhuming an old game called Powerslave.

The Stanley Parable has dethroned DDLC as the highest indie game on my list this year, though it's still a close call between the two titans. But really though who can compete with 3 games in one? Not much more needs to be said about The Stanley Parable other than that it is genius and hilarious. The rest those who have played it already know and those who don't have it to look forward to.
