Final Fantasy VII remake is my highest new game this year, I was tempted to put it all the way up at #7 for thematic reasons, but I decided that was a bit of a stretch even if most parts of the game are that good. I always thought the game looked better than people gave it credit for and I finally picked it up when I got a PS5 (wanted the best possible experience for this one) and yeah, it’s better than people give it credit for. Aside from a few questionable story changes I would consider it one of the best games ever made - combat, music, graphics and character interactions are all worthy of the highest possible marks and it has the advantage of building upon a gaming legend so you already know and love the characters and the setting from the get-go and that love only increases that with how exceptionally it adds to it. If I liked the cast of FF7 before, it's one of my absolute favorites across gaming now. There are undeniably some small blemishes and I could write pages and pages on the decision to let the Kingdom Hearts director rewrite Square’s greatest story (it’s better than you’d expect so far, but he did straight up add in-world Deus Ex Machina as a story mechanic), but this is still hands down the best gaming experience I’ve had since my list last year.
