Forums - Sales - New Digimon Game Is Blowing Up on Steam

Digimon is back baby!

Peaked at 84,458 concurrent players reaching No8 on the most played chart, No1 on the top sellers chart in the US and No2 globally - and to think that steam is not even its main platform.

Amazing to see! Hopefully its also doing well on Playstation and we also see a 1m week one launch.

I used to be insanely into Digimon and I was paying attention to this one but I think it's still a bit too unambitious and date for my liking. Particularly battle animations. But the better this does, the more likely I'll eventually get that Persona/metaphor quality Digimon game.

Physical copies being sold out in bodes well for the PS5 version.

No doubt a Switch 2 version is on it's way but if Sony also want to chip in and contribute towards the development on the next one I won't be mad if it stays PS/PC exclusive.

I'd hardly call that blowing up, but it's a respectable number anyway.

Its a Bandai Namco game, chances are that it will stay on PS/PC, they don't care about Switch/Switch 2 in general.

I was disapointed at some battle animations too, specifically the common 'TM' moves (they look like Pokemon - bite from a distance) but all the Digimon specific moves are well animated which is very cool. They gave soul and character to every Digimon, something that is largely missing from Pokemon.

Lack of PvP is another downside, but everything else looks like a win. I only played the demo so far (Ps5 copies sold out in my town), and from the first cutscenes and boss fight, the story looks very promising.

1m launch would be a dream >.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth had a all time peak of 3,429 - https://steamdb.info/app/1042550/charts/

Digimon Survive had a all time peak of 6,179 - https://steamdb.info/app/871980/charts/

This game - Digimon Story Time Stranger has a peak of 84,458 ( https://steamdb.info/app/1984270/charts/ )which definitely is a blow up compared to previous games and comparison to other big jRPGs.

Final Fantasy XVI had at its peak 27,508: https://steamdb.info/app/2515020/charts/

Persona 5 Royal at its peak 35,474: https://steamdb.info/app/1687950/charts/

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at 40,564: https://steamdb.info/app/2909400/charts/

^ Granted these are all late releases so probably not a good number to go by - if FFVII and XVI were released day 1, they could have reached 6 digits.

So the closest examples would be via day 1 release are...

Metaphor ReFantazio at 85,000+ - https://steamdb.info/app/2679460/charts/

Persona 3 Reload at 45,000+ - https://steamdb.info/app/2161700/charts/

Tales of Arise at 60,000+ - https://steamdb.info/app/740130/charts/

For a Digimon game (which btw is niche) releasing on a platform that wasnt its target but released at day 1 still and to be able to achieve these numbers is great and a blow up compared to the examples above.

Yeah, of course it's relative to what you set the context to be. I was interested in new releases in general, not just previous Digimon games. I guess it's better than late ports but like you said, they've been doing pretty poorly at launch, so no wonder. The day 1 releases you listed are akin to what I thought, and for those, my point stands: not blowing up but respectable nonetheless. But of course if you're comparing previous Digimon games, it's a massive difference.

Genuinely happy to see Digimon do good. The only reason I haven't picked it up is that it has Denuvo (goddammit, Namco Bandai). Not sure if it's coming to the original Switch...

You know it deserves the GOTY.
