Come January it will likely be less than 100k a month globally, especially if any more retailers take it off the shelves.

With fairly low Switch 2 sales in Europe compared to Japan and NA, it seems Asian markets outside Japan like China, Korea, Taiwan and now south east Asia will be more important markets for Nintendo in the years to come.

Here we see data representing the sales through to consumers and change in sales performance of the four current platforms (Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 1) over comparable periods for 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods.

Asia (Japan, mainland Asia, Middle East) hardware estimates for August 2025:
Switch 2 - 476,731
PlayStation 5 - 366,695
This estimation is quite high for PS5 outside Japan, it's ~334k outside Japan compared to ~222k for Switch 2. Is it right?
PS5 is likely absorbing whatever market share was left for Xbox in America after this price hike in both hardware and services
With GTA release scheduled to release by mid 2026 PS5 might have a good momentum for its second best selling (calendar) year in both Americas and Europe
Have 2021 to mid 2022 not been absolutely dogshit with its chip shortage, outselling PS4 would have been a certainty

The pent up demand from 2021-2022 was followed by a surge in 2023 as stock became freely available; I expect most people who would have bought one in 21/22 just bought one in 23 anyway, so I don't think it would be much higher without the chip crunch to be honest.

The pentup demand from 2021-2022 was absorbed by an increase in sales of Series S. Make no mistake, at least 6 million units of current Xbox sales would have come to PS5 if both were readily available. Those sales can come back to PS5 eventually once Series S no longer is able to handle current gen game in acceptable state, but only if we have an extended generation. The odds are the sales Playstation lost will come back only on PS6, if ever

If those Series S buyers really wanted a PS5, they've had nearly 3 years of plentiful availability to pick one up.
As for running games in an "acceptable" state, the mass market has shown themselves to be very tolerant of low end visuals, as evidenced by the enormous success of the Switch and games like Roblox or Minecraft. Most casuals just wanna play shit like those Fortnite, COD, FIFA, etc, a Series S should be just fine for that.
Next gen it's looking like Xbox simply won't be an option for the mainstream consumer any more, but Sony still may not gain them all back as they may migrate to PC.

When both consoles shares 90% of their library and only one is available for purchase the choice is obvious. People bought a Series S because even if PS5 is a better console all arround Series S was still going to play all its games except for few Playstation first party titles and an eventual Sony published second party. With Sony exclusive line up being rather mediocre there is no reason to get the PS5 down the line if you already have the Series S or X
Still, just bad luck for Sony. They had the right console, just not the right stock

I still expect many of them have gotten a PS5 since, either because that's what they really wanted all along, or for titles that didn't come to Xbox.
With prices rising and the economy worsening, it's possible that outselling PS4 wouldn't have been on the cards even if the chip crunch didn't happen, though of course we'll never know.
