Which is where I am baffled.  I am sure the more loyal MAGA folks are ok with Iran, but the general public, including republicans..  this is wildly unpopular.  If the GoP doesn't do something, they will get rocked in the mid-terms.

MAGA folk make up a majority of the population of most Southern states, and they are loving the cruelty, even if they are getting hurt. They're definitely drinking the Flavor-Aid in places like Oklahoma.

Not much to do unless 21 Republican senators decide to cross the aisle and agree to convict him in an impeachment trial. I say 21 because, even though there are 47 Democratic senators and 67 votes are needed to convict, one of Fetterman's balls is in a jar on Trump's desk, and Fetterman's other ball is in a jar on Netanyahu's desk.

I am not convinced that is an accurate statement.  I don't think, even with GOP in the south, this Iran conflict is well liked.

The original bombing I think had support, but the more it drags on, the more he is requesting billions, the more gas increases in price, the more we see our kids being deployed...  if he doesn't get out of this mess soon, even with his core group, I think he loses a lot of people.

It would be in the GoPs best interest to get out of this mess.

edit

I realize my litmus test is wildly unscientific, but most of my family are big supporters...  they are unhappy.  I always figured it takes a lot for them to be unhappy and that is the start of a trend that isn't going to go well long term.

Needs to be impeached immediately. This whole Iran thing is out of control. If he bombs them hardcore, especially civilian infrastructure, Iran will close the Strait. Plus, the US is running towards being an enemy of the UN. My god, if the US continues this trend and ever slips up on the world stage, the entire world will get revenge. Not having friends is a level of stupidity that is devoid of strategy and logic.  Iran is the first act of Trump that suprises me, the other stuff was predictable.  But this, this is just absurd.  I cannot believe the GoP is going along with it.

Why can’t you believe it? The entire GOP caucus has made it loudly clear that their member’s balls are being kept in jars on Trump’s nightstand. Hell, some of them handed their own balls over to him willingly, already in jars.

And their balls are in jars in large part because GOP voters support what’s being done to the Iranians. They support all of it. That’s why I noped TF out of Oklahoma.

Would be easier to use the 25th amendment, bc I’m sure that JD Vance’s narcissistic a$$ would looooooovvvvveeee to be president

Is Trump threatening nuclear war on Iran?

Isn't it just the 'bomb all power plants and bridges' thing from a few days ago, or has something changed?

The 25A is a good idea in theory. In practice, the MAGA base would consider the 25A a coup d'etat and respond accordingly.

Instead of the 25A as written, they should have ended the impeachment process and replaced it with the president being able to be forced to step down by a no-confidence vote in the House ONLY, and then holding a snap election to replace the president, with the VP only acting President until the snap election was decided.

Part of the reason why there's constant civil unrest over the occupant of the White House, is because people are locked into an administration for four years.

I truly hope your family are the harbingers of things to come in November.

Meanwhile, MAGA acquaintances of mine celebrated their Easter by posting apologia on Trump's behavior, prefaced by "I will continue to tolerate my liberal friends and family."

Tolerate. How fucking big of them, eh?

Isn't it just the 'bomb all power plants and bridges' thing from a few days ago, or has something changed?

Destroying civilization sounds stronger than that and he probably makes various threats semi regularly so knows to keep them vague. So I’m personally still at the same place.

That’s a good point, so it might be a good idea for Vance to recruit various media and political spokespersons to say that Trump has to go.

What civilization functions without power in 2026, especially without bridges? I disagree with you, but I'm guessing it's best if we just agree to disagree.

Well Gaza still survives without, err, everything.

But yeah it's semantics, kill the power in any Western country and see how that goes... And in our local town of 2 bridges, 1 is closed now for the summer, it's chaos every rush hour. We're one accident on the other bridge away from civil breakdown lol. They have a temporary fire station (2 parked trucks) on the other side of the river as well now as the FD can't get through either.

Iran has been hit hard and the sad thing of it all is that it will set back social advancement the most in the country. The underground movements for change are / will be hit hardest now the regime has further hardened. Trust is completely gone and no doubt a witch hunt for any US sympathizers is underway. Bombing a country for human rights abuses is only worsening those abuses. But it was never to help the people of Iran anyway, all about American 'interests' in the ME.

And not to forget Lebanon that's way worse off than Iran still, 1/5th of the population displaced, South of the country occupied and demolished. That with US as co-guarantor for the 2024 ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel... And now claiming Lebanon is not part of the deal, which Pakistan confirmed it was.

Anyway it does seem Trump has urged Netanyahu to talk to Lebanon, but as usual Israel will do it under fire

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel wants direct negotiations with Lebanon on disarming Hezbollah and establishing peaceful relations, but said there is no ceasefire currently in place. Lebanese officials say Beirut has not received a formal invitation for talks, with one of them insisting there will be “no negotiations under fire.”

And thus the Strait of Hormuz remains practically closed (to the West) while the real hit to the world economy is starting.

He didn’t say stopping civilization or making the machinery thereof stop. He said that he would destroy a particular civilization.  Nuance and contextl can be everything.
