What Platform Do You Think Will Come to NSO Next?

DS 11 52.38%

Wii 7 33.33%

3DS 0 0%

Wii U 0 0%

A Non-Nintendo Console 3 14.29%

While many people mocked or scratched their heads at Nintendo's recent announcement of Virtual Boy games coming to NSO, I think they are missing the bigger picture.

Before the latest Direct, if you had ask me which Nintendo platform was least likely to see software support on NSO I definitely would have said Virtual Boy. It makes sense because not only was the platform a notorious flop it was also dependent on specialized hardware. Yet here we are.

I actually thought the announcement was very neat. Not only will they have the replica Virtual Boy hardware peripheral but they will also offer a cheaper cardboard version. This is an opportunity for Nintendo to make new revenue on one of their biggest flops, but also brings niche software to a wider audience at a more affordable price than if people were going to attempt to track down the original hardware and software.

What is really important though is that this means there is practically no excuse to not support other Nintendo platforms down the line. It is not hard to imagine DS, 3DS, Wii, and even Wii U support coming down the line, even if Nintendo uses it as a opportunity to sell more controllers/peripherals.

What do you thinK? Will we see any more platforms added to NSO this gen? Which one?

The way backwards compatibility has been integrated with Switch 2 already made it clear that eventually all Nintendo consoles will become a part of NSO. Admittedly, this "all" didn't include the Virtual Boy because of how obscure it was.

The Switch 2 eShop combines Switch 2 and Switch 1 software offerings into one big store, so gone are the days of shops getting closed down eventually, like it happened for the DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U in the past. As for more old platforms getting added to NSO, it's reasonable to expect progress in chronological order, so the DS would be next, followed by the Wii. These two I can see being added during this generation, something like DS in 2028 and Wii in 2031 because Nintendo is opting for a slow, but steady release schedules of classic games.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

Considering Nintendo has added the likes of MSX, Commodore 64, TurboGrafx-16, and Neo Geo on previous home consoles, quite literally anything is possible.

I personally hope for Saturn or Dreamcast next. Genesis being the only Sega system on NSO for 4 years now, it's time for a new one. Although it would probably end up being the Game Gear lol.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

I would have bought the Virtual Boy accessory as soon as it was available if it wasn't for one thing - all the games being part of the Expansion pack. I don't subscribe to this and don't plan to. It would have been much more attractive to consumers if Nintendo released the 14 VB games on a cartridge instead of having to subscribe to play them. Hard Pass.

Considering that they already have GC emulation sorted and Switch has motion controls, Wii should next in line

You are better off emulating VB as not only does not need a headset. You can change the colors to whatever you want. I want NSO to add TG16. Saturn and Dreamcast. We have the Genesis. Time for more.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Wii is far and away the easiest of the remaining platforms, so I think that's next.

I disagree. Nintendo’s pumping out Wii ports/remasters for $40-60 (Kirby:RtDL, DKCReturns, SMGalaxy1+2) unlike all other systems. I believe DS is next in-line. Virtual Boy reveals that Nintendo is open to producing accessories to better emulate the feeling of OG system; a dual screen Switch 2 accessory is not an unrealistic reality.

N-Gage, Zeebo and Ouya are good choices to add to NSO

Nintendo is selling NES, SNES, N64 and GC controllers for Switch, so a VB accessory isn't exactly news.

But I doubt a DS accessory will be made. Take a look at the Castlevania Dominus Collection (includes three DS games) and its various options to display two or even three DS screens at once on one screen.
