Forums - Nintendo - Alternate history: Nintendo makes the Wii a generation earlier

Things not highly detailed in the OP like, exact launch date, first party and third party launch titles, general first and third party titles throughout the gen, hardware design (aesthetics), launch hardware (bundles), media type, accessories, etc, etc, etc, all and many more could make a tiny if not massive difference in the outcome of this alternate history.

Without a much more detailed breakdown of the details, this leaves the door open to many interpretations of what may have played out. Which in a way, is interesting in of itself, but makes it far more difficult to come to any sort of consensus as to how things would've likely played out. I'm not sure if it's better to be more specific about these alternate histories or not, or just leave it more open and kind of a free for all, because it's unlikely that everyone is going to automatically agree with the OP's decisions on the details, whatever those may be, to begin with.

Personally I don't know which I prefer. More details with a goal of coming to consensus, or seeing everyone's differing views on what would make the most sense for those alternate details to be. I do know I'd miss seeing what other's would expect makes more sense in terms of the initial details, if the OP had everything strictly detailed and fully fleshed out.

The intention was to leave it more open to interpretation and discussion, yes.

Ah alright. I was just making a general statement. Nothing to do with your personal choice of how to go about laying out the thread. I think I would do the same probably in the end. Nobodies perfect, so being extremely detailed may cause more chaos than just letting people speak their mind,

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

True, it mostly depends on the games that would have come with the system. Super Mario Sunshine and especially Wind Waker got tons of backlash for it looking like a kiddie game, Twilight Princess addressed that (I like Wind Waker much better but TP is what people wanted)

If the Wii came out right alongside the PS2 in 2000 with Twilight Princess announced, Mario Galaxy and GTA3 releasing as a multi platform game history would have been very different.

Just depends on what push Wii Sports would have given the Wii in 2000 vs 2006. If enough to match the initial momentum of PS2 coming off PS1, then Wii and PS2 would have at least stuck along each other, then perhaps become the more popular system with games like TimeSplitters 2 on it with pointer controls.

I'd also say, based on the 2001 Wii timeline, that Wii U still launches, around 2006/2007, and hilariously does better because of how terrible things go with PS3. SNY may have even pushed for motion controls in this scenario because of how well 2001 Wii does, just making their problems even worse than they already were with PS3. I'd say one way or another, Wii U sells 2X-3X as many units in this timeline during 7th gen.

Just dawned on me. A more expensive console launch, with motion controls in the box. What does that remind me of...

'Take that outta the box because we don't really want it, and sell it for cheaper'.

Oh... ya... XB1. LOL.

Man, not only would Wii U have sold much better, but 360 might've totally won 7th gen in that scenario depending on SNY's reaction.
