True, it mostly depends on the games that would have come with the system. Super Mario Sunshine and especially Wind Waker got tons of backlash for it looking like a kiddie game, Twilight Princess addressed that (I like Wind Waker much better but TP is what people wanted)
If the Wii came out right alongside the PS2 in 2000 with Twilight Princess announced, Mario Galaxy and GTA3 releasing as a multi platform game history would have been very different.
Just depends on what push Wii Sports would have given the Wii in 2000 vs 2006. If enough to match the initial momentum of PS2 coming off PS1, then Wii and PS2 would have at least stuck along each other, then perhaps become the more popular system with games like TimeSplitters 2 on it with pointer controls.
