By a country mile. Metaphor is fantastic in that early game, loads of fun and overall I'd say it's a great game at about an 8/10 but then it goes through periods of stagnation and slogn. Atlus never promised Metpahpor would be a genre evolution or a maturing of they're particular style in the genre but they heavily implied it and yet this game delivered on exactly what they implied for Metaphor and with modern graphics to boot and no holding the player hostage for 80 hours with severe pacing issues, all the extra content is completely optional and not a nessessity to be leveled enough for the final fights. It actually is optional side content. No return of the king style climax that ends a dozen times or over spectacle in the final boss. This game is leagues ahead of Metaphor. Funnily enough, it's a game that could be that padded out and stretched, not that it should, it's perfect the way it is but Atlus have no excuse now, they really need to up their game. I still believe the journos only played the first 20-30 hours of Metaphor and that's why it is rated so highly rated as they scored the game on that where it could justify a 10. Look at the user scores, thst's where things are more reflective of people who've finished these games. I know only 33% of journos finished Clair Obscur cause the trophy data showed it the days leading up to release. If this was a title in an established series or from a company with a good track record this would be 95+, easily. |
Glad i preordered it. Should arrive in a few days

Enjoy and savour it cause experiences like this don't come often and while the game is still just as fun in replays it looses that initial magic. Do yourself a favour and stay on normal or above, the characters mechanics need timely fights to unfold properly and the passive boosts are way more meaningful when you really need to be thinking of min maxing and experimenting with them. You're in for a treat.
I have to wonder will this reach the completion rate of Atlus games, they're usually above 40% but that's cause of such a harcore dedicated audience. I wonder how much casuals were brought in on this. 43% made it past the final boss on Metaphor. 22% of beating Clair Obsvur so far, game is half the length.l, muvh easier and way more addictive but I have to wonder about that dedicated JRPG audience and if it was diluted here. 50% for FF16 gor example. 42% for Unicorn Overlord. The numbers have definetly started slowing down and unless people taking it easy in act 3 that final boss doesn't seem to be getting much love. 33% have made it to act 3 so at least 10% of people are hanging out there.

I'd be shocked if it surpassed Metaphor like you said they have a hardcore fanbase. This game is also just harder in general than a persona/metaphor game. I've seen a ton of post from people saying they are done and they are just going to youtube the rest of the story.
The numbers continue ro increase, The End trophy got a 5% boost since Wednesday, the platinum a 1.3% boost up to 5% now and people are still playing it on Steam charts, It's still reaching near 90k. 70k so far and it's still early on Saturday. This might reach JRPG completion rates or close to it.
And it being so good isn't going unrewarded.
Thirty-three days ago, we released Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

This thread title needs updating. "So good" does not encapsulate how fucking phenomenal this game is. I had a session last night in my no death Expert playthrough and I started rezing party members cause I kept dying going against one of the rules I have on myself to wipe or reliad the sace if one character dies. I was able to reload a save from two hours earlier and kept to my rules, inverted everyone so they can't be healed and got through what I was doing without a death while sticking to my other rules. The game is just so fucking incredibly designed as to what I'm doing is actually a viable way to play cause you can build for more damage output. I decided 100 lumina points each will be the cap for my chaeacters give or take a few should my bulld need one or two extr lumina and that's pretty much where everyone is for end game anyway aside from specialising one character and I'm not going to use second chance or cheater when the time comes. Story still hits even after beating the game twice I'm only skipping camp encounters that aren't triggered for the story and you don't have to engage with them in any way so that's easy. It is such an immense joy to play, it should be prescribed as medicine for many ailments.
And in stat news close to 30% of people have beaten in on PS5, the average for most games a hard number to reach since so many new players are incoming. I do reckon now that it'll pass the 40% of the very hard-core 80-100 hours RPG's, somewhere between that and the 49% of FF16. The platinum might even surpass Unicorn Overlord at 18% should they patch in the ability to get the old key later in a playthrough for players who missed it. So many people hung around in between the start of act 3 and the end, I suspect many will attempt 100%. Plat is at 6% now exactly now.
This game is also a great game to keep open while you're doing things, I urge anyone who has finished it to start an expert playthtough and use it as a kind of background game in the same way you would a Civ or Xcom game. You can play for five minutes, make a few turns or do a battle and then leave it hanging without pausing. The music is just fantastic to have in the background and every scene makes a great sort of wallpaper no matter where you leave it. Playing in small chunks does not take away any if the fun.

I finished the main story earlier this week and I'm still thinking about the game non-stop. I'm at the point where I can fiddle with my characters to make them as broken as possible and it's a blast. Even though you can become truly ultra powerful, the end game content follows with bosses having millions of HP. I'm pretty sure I'll start New Game + as soon as I'm done with all the sidequests.

Honestly, I would think secondly on NG+ unless you are very early in the end game. You get so much lumina and break the game so much that NG+ is just one shot everything kinda deal, it's the FromSoft style NG+ where you're OP until the end game comes around again, it doesn't scale up from the end game stuff, you might get away with it if you haven't broken the game too much and raise the difficulty to expert. I'd start a fresh NG tbh and if you feel you've learned the timing to well up it to expert. Even though 60% 9f my initial playthrough was expert, I'm finding my third playthough, a no party member death run with capped lumina and no side content a fairly decent challenge.
