Forums - Sales - Famitsu Sales: Week 19, 2025 (May 05 - May 11)

What i find interesting is that OLED sales still dominate, you would think base Switch and Switch Lites would start selling more than the OLED by now. Because why would casuals that get the Switch after 8 years on the market buy the most expensive Switch model? Could be the case that even casual gamers are willing to pay premium for the best experience, which bodes well for Switch 2 sales potential in Japan.

PS5 dying that death. I wonder if PS5 is heading toward

Minecraft is doing really well this week to the point that it is now higher in the charts than both Mario Party and Mario Kart.  Clair Obscure got a good boost.  Probably a restock?  Switch did better this week, than it did during one of the two holiday weeks.  In fact, PS5 looks like it is closer to dying off than Switch is.

To me it looks like Switch 1 is remaining a Minecraft device in Japan, and this may include a few other non-core Nintendo games like Switch Sports.  Switch hardware sales are holding firm, and Minecraft is moving towards the top of the charts for evergreen titles.  Minecraft fans would prefer a Switch 1 over a Switch 2 until the game gets ported over.  Also, for most of the past 8 years, Mario Kart 8 has been charting as the top evergreen, but now it may permanently shift to Minecraft.  Minecraft only got a 9% boost this week, but it is solidly ahead of Mario Kart 8, which means it sold well during the holiday weeks too.

Mario Kart fans are likely holding out for Switch 2, so it is interesting to see how the sales charts adapt to that.

I mean there are only so many people in Japan that:

1: Are into home consoles (Which have declined in popularity for a long time in Japan).

2: Are willing to pay 70K Yen for a home console.

So those two things naturally lead PS5 to not have much further sales left in Japan.

Can anyone provide context into the popularity of GTA in Japan? Do we expect it to push PS5 hardware at all?

GTAV was big in JP, though not much bigger than most Nintendo exclusives. My expectation is that it’ll give PS5 about as much of a boost as Monster Hunter Wilds…maybe a little more. GTA is not as big in JP as in US/EU.

I don't think Grand Theft Auto 6 will boost the PS5 nearly as much as Monster Hunter did in Japan, especially by the time it launches.  I'd expect the game itself to sell relatively well for the region and user base, though.

The fact Switch is close to 30k less than a month from its replacement and has so far about 70% of last year's YTD in its 9th year is really something.

Will be interesting to see how both Switch 1 and PS5 sell once Switch 2 arrives; will both be decimated, or will they manage to hang in there.

Seems like Swtich 2's imminent launch is having a bigger impact on the PS5 than its own predecessor.

The Switch's last month to itself is somewhat better than expected so far though the PS5's return to over 10k was short lived. With nearly 20k Switch OLED's sold for this week I wonder why those people are only just now getting one instead of waiting a bit to get a Switch 2 for not much more.

Maybe the reason is the OLED screen itself

Perhaps though someone valuing that over every advantage the Switch 2 has is strange to me. If someone is mainly a handheld gamer then the screen combined with the better battery life is more understandable but even then I still wonder why someone would wait till now to finally get one when the Switch 2 coming this year has been known about for a while now.

Do keep in mind that the OLED model is the reason the Switch is already down a lot YoY. The Lite is actually somewhat up and the regular one is down by a lot less. The OLED should fall further within the next couple months or so due to the Switch 2 launch.
