Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch 2 Game Prices. Will it change how you purchase games?

What effect will the price of Physical Switch 2 games have on you?

I was already primarily d... 14 25.93%

I will switch from physic... 4 7.41%

I will keep buying physic... 22 40.74%

The Switch 2 has just been announced and is launching from $450, but the game prices have also now just been announced and this is likely the much bigger surprise. Mario Kart World when it launches in June will be the first game to charge $80 for it's standard physical version.

Mario Kart World (Digital) = $70?/£67/€80
Mario Kart World (Physical) = $80/£75/€90

Donkey Kong Bonanza (Digital) = $60?/£59/€70
Donkey Kong Bonanza (Physical = $70?/£67/€80

Basically Nintendo is going to be releasing $70 games, but with an additional premium of $10 for a physical copy.

How will this pricing effect your purchasing habits? Will you move over to digital? Continue buying physical?

I've been digital only for the past two years across all platforms (Playstation, Switch, Xbox and PC) and will continue to do so

Sucks for physical.

I'll be buying first party titles day 1 - for the ones I'm most interested in and just wait for the Costco or Newegg eShop card sales for the others.

As for third party titles, I'm not gonna be buying any the first year unless they go cheap, if they are multiplat, likely wont buy them for a few years.

On Switch I have paid €30/€40 for physical versions of games that were available for €20/€30 in digital form. Percentage-wise, that's bigger than paying €80 for a €70 game, so consequently this isn't going to change my buying habits.

It's also worth keeping in mind that the physical pricing is not as static as the digital pricing, so it's not a given that physical versions will cost €10 more.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

I'll still buy some physical games, but not as many because now Switch 2 has more included storage and the higher pricing.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

I'll wait for discounts.

I barely buy physical games for switch because the price is absurd here in Brazil.

SteamMyAnimeList and Twitter - PSN: Gustavo_Valim - Switch FC: 6390-8693-0129 (=^・ω・^=)

We will see. $80 seems highly absurd. I just can't see anything Mario kart is going to do that can be worth that.
Specially when the hdr/4k/120 is limited to being docked.

You are bound to love Earthbound.

€90/$90 feels like alot for a game.
And Nintendo isn't known for sales or price drops... prices that high are actually off putting to me.

As long as a game is 95% on the cart I will buy it as a physical copy. Hopefully those new "download only" cards aren't the majority. They do offer an interesting take though. They are basically digital games with a sellable and tradable license. That's pretty pro-consumer as far as digital games go. Steam, Sony, Xbox, etc. should be offering some way to sell or trade your digital titles as well.

Digital whenever discounted

Physical otherwise

But I'm certainly buying less games. During the first 2 years my Switch 1 life it was my only modern console, the other being an old PS3

Switch 2 has competition of a PS5 and a gaming PC, so I will buy less game eveb if only for having too many options already
